Owner description: Originally constructed during Napoleonic times in preparation for a possible invasion, Chatham's Fort Amherst was also used as a civil defence centre in both world wars. The Fort has been in a near constant state of restoration since the 1980's by the Fort Amherst Heritage Trust, a charity who works hard to manage and maintain the vast site whilst sympathetically returning its grounds and buildings to their original state to ensure Britain's largest Napoleonic Fortress can be enjoyed by all.

We did not know what to expect as all the other forts we have been to have been of the napoleanic kind with mounds and brick buildings. The tunnels were very interesting and it was good to compare it with Dover Castle which has similar tunnels. The tour was a bit long and we felt it would have been better if a little condensed. The view from the top of the site over Chatham is beautiful.

We dropped in here after the disappointment of the dickens worlds. We had some time to kill. We are so glad we did! We went on a tour of the tunnels. Incredibly informative and fascinating. Built to defend our shores from napoleonic France and the used during the Second World War, this is wonderfully maintained and gives a real sense of history. On warm day, still take your coat. It's cold down there!
I think you can walk around the ruins for free but to go into the tunnels you need a guide. This is quite cheap but there are only a few each day.

My family and I visited Fort Amherst a few years back and really wanted to return this year on the week my cousin came to stay - I think he loved it just as much as we did! Brilliant tour guide, really funny and full of facts. The whole site is clean and interesting to walk around. Even better because the sun was shining!

Our party consisted of myself, son (14yrs) and daughter (12yrs) and had a thoroughly enjoyable few hours. We arrived at 10am and was very pleased to see it is free parking if going on the tunnel tour. This timing was about right as it allowed us time to explore the lower parts of the site around Dock Road before going on the tunnel tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and informative. The tour was an hour and a half and finishes at the very reasonably priced cafe. We would recommend and are considering returning for the re-enactment days. Overall a good value and enjoyable few hours.
