“Very poor service with little idea of how to wait a table or serve presentable food.”
Reviewed August 26, 2013

Initial impact of this resaurant is one with no soul, bare white walls no floor coverings, plain white small tables with no table cloths, place mats or even a tea light candle to add something.Paper serviates sum up the standard of decoration and atmosphere.Could be called contemporary but this is far from chic. The food was both good and bad generally through no attention to detail. The mainated olives had just been seeped in brine and had no flavour due to being on the wrong side of ripe. The wine was fine but the waitress had no idea how to pour so you left with the table covered in drips remember there are no table cloths or a cloth to wrap the bottle so the poorly poured wine was left to run down the outside pooling again on the table. When the food arrived the seafood raviolli was tasty but a very small portion. The fish stew arrived looking like it had been around all day,the top was burnt with the shells actually burnt black. This was changed and the replacement was fine. After another long wait after being given the dessert menu we had to go and find a waitress,by this time the resaurant was empty and the three waitresses on shift seemed more interested in getting out. We ordered our sweets and coffee with liqures to help move things along as we had now been here for nearly two hours, unfortunately due to a lack of skill the coffees and liquers arrived before the sweets but at least they had arrived. It was only after the waitress had disappeared again that we realised that a hot latte coffee had been served in a handleless glass with no thought of how you pick this boiling glass up! When the desserts arrived one had been microwaved for so long that it had collapsed into a gooy mess this was pointed out which the waitress thought was funny and disappeared again. We then after waiting for nearly half hour to get the bill went to find a member of staff went to the bar area that you have to walk through to leave or get to the washrooms was being used as a rubbish area with the floor covered in veg box's and the bar in old veg and rubbish.I explained to the manager about the poor experiance we had had and that we were far from happy so please could we have the bill so we could leave, this arrived very shortly afterwards the quickest appearance of this three hour ordeal.one final issue when leaving was the male member of staff from the kitchen standing in the bar area in his track suit top and jeans with his arms folded staring at us trying to intimidate us as we left due i can only assume to the fact that we had complained. There are many good Italian restaurants in Canterbury but this is not one of them.Would i go back? Never.

“Not as good as other ASK's”
Reviewed August 5, 2013

Before i write this i'll say that i love the Ask restaurant at Westwood in Broadstairs & totally recommend it. Unfortunately Canterbury didn't seem as good.

We booked in advance as we wanted to sit in the outside area & relax in the sun. There were 4 of us & we went for a little celebration.

We arrived half an hour early and said we'd be happy to have a drink if there were no tables. We realised inside was totally empty & when we were shown to a table outside there were only 3 tables taken, all by families. We're 4 friends who'd not seen each other for a while so the conversation & laughs were flowing. This didn't seem to be welcomed by other diners. We weren't rowdy or drunk but kept getting looks every time one of us laughed! Not the most comfortable dinner i've ever eaten!

The garden is quite nice, tables not too close to each other & lovely & sunny. Our table was very wobbly though so we evened it up with a stone under the leg. It was made from rustic old tiles & quite a few were broken on my friends part, at one point a bit fell off lol.

We were served very quickly, not sure of the waitresses name but she was chatty & friendly. I can understand previous comments about staff as some of the others were very uninterested & stood about chatting & served drinks & food without so much as a smile.

Our drinks arrived after a few minutes & the waitress took our order. We had a 25% off voucher that we showed before we ordered & were told this would be taken off all food.

Our starters arrived very quickly, 3 of us had mushrooms on toast (cant remember the italian name) & i had the dough balls. All the starters got the thumbs up, although there were lots of dough balls i ended up sharing. Mine were chilli & cheese but not very spicy at all.

The restaurant was filling up (in the garden at least) so we had our plates in front of us for about 10mins. Not a major problem, when the waitress came back she asked if we wanted anymore drinks so we ordered a couple more.

As she cleared our empty bottles one fell & smashed on the floor. I felt a little shard of glass hit my toe. The waitress was quick to tell us not to help & that she'd go & get a dustpan. I looked at my foot & there was a bit of glass in it so i took it out & put it in the pan. No major injury visible. She apologised & went off. 5 minutes later i noticed my friends leg was bleeding. When we looked she had bits of glass in it. She took a bit out but it still looked a bit dodgy. I mentioned to the waitress & asked if there was a first aider as it was bleeding a fair bit & i thought there was still some glass in there. She bought us a blue plaster but made no mention of anyone being available to look at it!! My friend went to the toilet washed it & put the plaster on. It didn't seem to be taken very seriously and actually seemed to annoy a few other diners who were still glaring & a few tutted!

Our main courses arrived & were ok but nothing special. 2 of us had the chicken, 1 a chicken pasta & i had the calzone. No one was overly impressed, the calzone was very very hot. I love hot food but there were far too many chillies in this. The outside was a bit overdone too. Others reported that the chicken was a bit dry & were thankful for the sauce that came with it.

Our plates sat in front of us for another 10 mins after we'd finished as a few diners were now eating inside. 1 of us ordered the chocolate pudding which was ok, but was a very small slice!

We asked for the bill & when it came the 25% had not been taken off. We asked the waitress who said we needed a code to which we reminded her we'd already given the other waitress one! Bill was adjusted & came to £76 for the 4 of us which isn't too bad. I wouldn't have liked to have paid full price for that meal though. All the waitresses were busy when we left so we took the payment to the till where we had to wait for staff to finish tarting up their display before they took our money with a quick 'thanks'.

On our way out i visited the toilet which is a few floors up & very very warm. The building seemed a bit odd, set over a few floors it sort of felt like it should be someones house rather than a restaurant. All tables inside were very close together.

I was quite looking forward to this, having had very good, friendly service at Broadstairs Ask i'd hoped for similar here but i don't think i'd bother going again. There are plenty of restaurants in Canterbury so i think i'd be inclined to try something else.

“Great meal, service and value for money.”
Reviewed July 24, 2013

Went to Ask with my family to celebrate my wife's birthday. The service was friendly, attentive but unobtrusive and the lunch menu was varied and extensive. We all chose different starters and main courses and everything was enjoyed and polished off with gusto. We had a 25% off voucher so the bill was extremely reasonable however we would have been pleased to pay full price as the whole experience, service, food and environment are highly recommended.

“Unexpectedly great food and service.”
Reviewed July 21, 2013

We went without knowing what to expect. The restaurant has character and I really liked the high ceilings. Made it nice and airy. The service was efficient and friendly. The bolognese fetuccine, and the prawn risotto were really good.

Restaurant location was also excellent, as it is right beside the river tour we took. The lavatory was very clean and new. An overall pleasant experience.

“Great lunchtime spot”
Reviewed July 15, 2013 via mobile

Went here for lunch in a group of 6. Very accommodating staff. Really good portions & all the food was lovely. Great price too as we had a voucher for buy one get one for £3.00 so ended up costing under £10.00 with a drink.
