Certificate of Excellence

Location, service, and breakfast are excellent. However, the hotel was designed as a very smart hall of residence for the church. This shows in the small size of the rooms and en suite which are better suited to single occupancy. For example, the beds are short - the feet of anyone over six feet (or >185cm) tall hang over the end of the bed, unless your companion is short and allows you to place yourself diagonally across the bed. We could also hear our neighbours talk. However, given the sort of genteel clientele this place seems to attract, noise should not be an issue. Good value for the mid-week £85 price (especially as access to the cathedral, which would cost a couple £19, is included), less so for the Saturday price of £130.

Room Tip: Ask if there are largher rooms and longer beds

Dear Reviewer

Many thanks for taking the time to review your recent stay at Canterbury Cathedral Lodge.

We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay and I would also like to take this opportunity to address the other issues raised. Whilst you are absolutely right that the building was initially designed for Church retreats, we have also been open to leisure and corporate guests for several years and are pleased to cater for a wide range of visitors in a comfortable and contemporary setting. The bedrooms have been recently renovated and I would like to assure you that all beds are of a standard size. However, I do have to say that the most stunning feature in the Lodge bedrooms has to be the outstanding view of the Cathedral itself!

I do hope that you are able to return again.

Kind regards

Joanne Thompson

Stayed just one night in order to attend daughter's graduation at the Cathedral the next morning.

As we were in the annexe, the room quality and convenience factor were not quite as good as being in the main building. The rooms are simply but tastefully furnished in modern style. The bathroom could have done with some attention to the tiling and sealing, but as we were only there for one night, £85 for double occupancy and parking presented good value for money.

One thing to note with the annexe rooms facing the rear. The enclosed parking area outside seems to amplify all sounds, so we were kept awake by late night pub leavers, vehicle movements, etc. This would not be a problem with the other rooms.

The staff were very helpful with the booking and during the stay.

Although they don't have any food service during the day or evening, there are plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby.

The full range buffet style breakfast served in the Lodge dining room was good.

Recomended for an overnight or tourist stay.

If you do visit by car, get clear instructions for the entrance to the Cathedral campus - it's very small and is not clearly marked. As it's on a one way street, missing it entails a lengthy trip right around the one way system.

Dear Reviewer

Many thanks providing feedback on your stay with us. We are delighted that you had an enjoyable time and I am pleased to confirm that the bedrooms in our Burgate annexe have very recently been refurbished. However following your comments we will now also look into tiling in the bathrooms.

Our breakfast has recently been reviewed so it is wonderful to hear that you enjoyed it. As several local restaurants also offer a discount to our residents, I do hope that you were able to take advantage of this!

Kind regards

This hotel is worth each one of its four stars. Situated in the grounds of the Cathedral, we had two quiet and peaceful nights here, despite that this is in the very heart of this busy University and tourist town. The rooms are clean, modern and comfortable, and the (included) buffet breakfast had a good variety of toast, pastries, fresh fruit and cereals. The cost of entrance to the Cathedral (currently £8.00 pp) is included in the cost of the stay. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: 210 had a perfect view out over the Cathedral.

I went to the Lodge on a special occasion, we had the main room booked for our event . The food was served very quickly which was a plus but I was very unhappy to hear that just 5 minutes after we had started to eat , there was no more bread rolls !! I know its pathetic but you have to understand, the dishes weren't very big , you know the type ( big plates and small portions).
The white wine was terrible, the red wine on the other hand was good.
The room was nicely decorated I have to say and the whole experience was good, the staff were nice and professional.
I was just let down as well as my comrades on the bread rolls :(
Also the drinks at the bar were a bit expensive.
I haven't slept in the lodge so i can't comment on the rooms, but i have heard that they are good.
Its a perfect location and good service, i would suggest this establishment if you want to really live the Canterbruy experience.

Dear Reviewer

Many thanks for reviewing your experience at Canterbury Cathedral Lodge. We always appreciate feedback and are delighted that you enjoyed the venue and service; however I would like to take this opportunity to address the points raised. We were very sorry to hear your table ran short of bread rolls and this issue has been addressed with our Catering Manager to ensure all service staff are aware additional rolls can be cooked to order at events.

We do purchase all of our wines from a specialist wine merchant located just outside Canterbury, and our wine list is carefully chosen with their assistance to offer choice, quality and value for money. We are happy to replace any defective bottles upon request, as we do understand on rare occasions a bottle may be corked. We also do bench mark our bar pricing against other City centre hotels to ensure that our price list is competitive, and this festive season we additionally offered draught beers at local pub prices to increase choices of drinks.

I do hope that you will return again soon – perhaps on a residential basis next time!

Kind regards

We stayed at the Cathedral Lodge for one night just before Christmas as my firm had a Christmas Party Night at the Lodge. As previously stated, the Lodge is in the grounds of the Cathedral and perfect for wandering around Canterbury. We stayed in one of their modern rooms with a great view of the Cathedral. The room was very clean and comfortable. After our Christmas party my partner and I went to the library, and the very nice gentleman on reception made us some coffee and was very friendly telling us the history of the place.

All in all, I would recommend the Lodge to anyone who wants a central but quiet place to stay in Canterbury.

This hotel is within the grounds of the Cathedral itself (the "Cathedral precinct"), and therefore could not be better located for those primarily interested in the Cathedral. Our room had a fantastic view of the Cathedral (which was covered in snow the weekend we were there), and the entrance fee for two people (£9.50/adult) was included in the price of the room.

The girls on reception were very helpful and there was a wide range of good quality options for breakfast.

Only real downside was that the bed was quite small.

All in all, a very good choice in Canterbury. I would also recommend Boho Cafe and the Old Weaver Restaurant, both on the high street.

Cathedral Lodge's location is second-to-none. It is a modern, and comfortable hotel perfectly placed for visiting the Cathedral and Canterbury. I have only selected the "average" rating as the rating goes from average to very good and, personally, I thought this was a "good hotel" with an excellent location and efficient, friendly, reception staff.

The room and bathroom were small, clean, fuctional and modern. They were adequate and comfortable but not luxurious. We had asked for a double bed but this consisted of the two single beds being put together. They were not zipped, and neither did they have a topper, which was not ideal as the join was very pronounced. We thought the pillows were acceptable but that they could be of better quality.

The refrectory was a bright, airy room and the choice for breakfast was plentiful but buffet style.

The real joy of this hotel was its proximity to the town centre and its situation in the grounds of the Cathedral. The fact that you could just pop across to a service or for a tour of the historic building was a real plus. We would certainly stay there again and recommend it to anyone looking for a clean, comfortable hotel. .

Room Tip: Some rooms seem to have only a partial view of the Cathedral because the hotel buildings obscure muc...

Dear Reviewer

Many thanks for taking the time to post a review of your recent stay.

All feedback is much appreciated and please accept my apologies that the bed had not been properly joined to make a double. This is a rare oversight that would have been readily rectified had a member of Reception advised, but I will of course bring this to the attention of our team to ensure that this does not happen in the future. I am however delighted that you enjoyed the rest of your visit and our location within the Cathedral Precincts.

We do look forward to seeing you again soon.

Kind regards
