“Harriet House”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 10, 2013

This B & B was in a fabulous location, only 10 minutes walk from the city centre and also private parking to the rear of the property. We were able to leave our cars there all day without any parking charges (£1.10 per hour in city centre). Our room was very light, airy and cleaned to a very high standard.

Upon our arrival, we were greeted by Terry, a very friendly host. We stayed in room 1 at ground level, which was very welcome given our long journey and late arrival. Complimentary umbrellas were available at the door which enabled us to go and explore Canterbury on a rainy evening when we arrived.

Nice touches in the room included a small fridge to keep things cool, toiletries including hand wash and shower gel, a fleecy blanket for extra warmth if required and a hair dryer. The shower really was a nice touch of luxury and although the en-suite is a little on the small side, we still thought it very nice and recognised that the rooms have to fit the physical constraints of the property.

Breakfast was a simple system, just complete a form with time slot and your selection and drop it in the box in reception. Breakfast was of good quality with some nice touches, including home made jam and bread (toasted)

Overall we had a pleasant stay and would certainly consider returning if we were in the area again.

We visited Canterbury for two days in March and found Harriet House excellent value. It is within walking distance of the City and the accommodation was clean and comfortable, and the Host was very attentive. We would definitely stay here again and would recommend Harriet House for anyone visiting Canterbury.

Weekends have been quite busy recently even though the cold weather has been a bit challenging. We are glad that you made the most of your stay and thank you for your positive comments.

The hosts were friendly enough but unfortunately this did not make up for the irritations I experienced. However, they are small enough to be rectifiable.
Invest in a tv remote that works. Sometimes it worked mostly it didn't. Annoying.
The TV had a light that stayed on all night flashing away so I had to get up in the middle of the night and pull the plug out of the wall. Then the mini fridge was so NOISY I had to get up again to unplug that from the wall. Impossible to sleep until I did!
The breakfast room was FREEZING at 8am. The hosts knew the night before when I was eating, so no excuses. Finally, one tiny piece of toast with my coffee! Yes, I did tick the box for light breakfast but a packet of Alpen and one piece of toast? The show of fare was not enticing.

As this reviewer has stated, all these grumbles could have been avoided if we had been informed about them. If we knew that the batteries in the remote need replacing we would have raced to do it. The fridge and tv both have off switches and in our opinion do not amount to writing about. The breakfast room is never freezing as we have a radiator and an electric fire which were certainly on full on a freezing cold February morning. Our light breakfast consists of unlimited home made bread toasted along with a vast range of cereals, juices, fruit, pastries and yoghurts. This review is most untrue and at worst, unkind. We care very much about our customers experience but on this occasion can only assume that the reviewer had to collate as many minor negatives together to paint such a bad picture of us.

We would ask potential guests to see all our other glowing reviews to get a real picture of how we really run our business. We would however agree with one of the reviewers comments, we really are friendly people!!!

We spent 2 nights at Harriet House in February for a winter break.
Although the weather was very cold Harriet House was always nice and warm when we returned, which made it a very comfortable stay.
The owners, Terry and Chris were also very welcoming
The accomdation was impecabally clean, furtniture and ftittings were all new and of good quality.
Breakfast whether cooked or, continental was also excellent quality with home made bread and preserves. We would recommend a stay at Harriet House.

I booked this hotel for an engineer who stays in hotels quite a lot, as a break from the usual large chain hotels that we usually use. Friendly, welcoming and spotlessly clean! Breakfast was good too and on time. Would recommend.

My husband and I travelled to Harriet House by train - from the station it was only a 10 minute walk from Harriet House. It was very easy to find and has a pretty front garden. The door was opened by a beaming Terry- our host for the weekend who made us feel very welcome. He was a gentleman and carried my suitcase to our lovely room which we had booked for 3 nights. Terry was informative and gave us some local information and left us to settle in. The location is great for the city centre, only 10 minutes walk along the river. There are plenty of local pubs within close proximity who all serve good food.

After a long walk out it was great to get back to our cosy and very warm room. Terry left us a menu choice on our bed along with some chocolates every night which was a lovely touch,so you could pick what you would like cooking for breakfast. Breakfast was delicious with fresh pastries and bread, homemade jam and cheese with full english and as much toast as you would like.

The whole house is very tastefully decorated (I was quite jealous!) and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay - we would recommend Harriet House to our friends.

Stay here every year and as always it was excellent!!! Modern inside with a country feel outside. Made to feel very welcome as you arrive, rooms warm & inviting with the beds comfy. Cooked breakfast is a must with homemade bread and local farm produce, continental available too with a great variety on display. 10 mins into centre either by main road or a scenic river walk. So many shops, pubs & restaurants to visit and not forgetting the Cathedral.........Beautiful!!!!!! We hope to return for many yrs in the future
