“Could do a bit better”

We enjoyed our stay very much. It's in a great location in its own courtyard set back from a busy road and insulated from noise by the buildings in front of it. We were comfortable and it was adequately equipped apart from a few niggles like an absence of oven gloves, bin bags, J clothes.
We needed more basic instructions to working the heating and video/TV. One disappointment was that the bath plug didn't work. So showers only. The standard of maintainance wasn't great. No welcoming "goodies". This place is not cheap; I think the owners should improve its standard and perhaps their hospitality.

Liked best: The location and the spaciousness and the facilities - all equally important
Liked least: Perhaps a few more bits and pieces in the kitchen but all the basics were there.

“Spacious accommodations, quiet, good location for Canterbury and Kent”
Reviewed June 17, 2014 for a stay in June 2014

Just got back last night from a 12 day trip to UK including 7 nights at the Old Fire Station on London Road, Canterbury. A 2-bedroom, 3-bathroom unit well suited for our party of six including 4 teens.

The horse-shoe shaped accommodations are spacious (two indoor eating areas, one for four and one for six, outside picnic table for 6, large upstairs bedroom and bathroom, generous main living area) and well-equipped (Sky satellite tv, free no-hassle internet, full kitchen with large fridge and enough counter space - well-supplied, but Adelle also delivered extra plates and glasses for a specialized need, within about 30 minutes of us asking about them).

As a group of 6, with four teenagers, we appeciated the square footage and the three bathrooms (one 1/2 bath, one shower room, one full bathroom). I actually chose this place despite it being a little further out of the city than others for the bathrooms, as so many other rentals only offered one, which I could see being very inconvenient.

Although it is a bit of a walk into the city centre, it's very doable, and in return you get an off-road location that is super-quiet at night - you are at the back of a courtyard that is itself located behind a pair of solid wooden gates that cut noise and add security.

Pros:
Several modern bathrooms
Cleanliness
Light-filled
Free wifi
Lots of food, pubs, etc., within walking distance - try the backyard grotto/garden of The Eight Bells, virtually next door, for very pretty flowers

Cons (minor)
Location is less central than some other Canterbury rentals, but still fine
Parking space in the courtyard is tight to get into - we parked (free) on the street as our Hyundai 7-person minivan would fit but was a pain to manoeuvre. We were out most of the day, so the 4-hour no-return maximum during the day was not an issue for us and we found street parking within about 50 yards of the front door every night, no problem.
Key box was hard to find -- it's set off to the right, on a post along a non-opening floor to ceiling window. We were looking around all the doors and missed checking the window frame, but again Adelle picked up the phone pronto and sorted it all out very cheerfully.

We visited Dover Castle, St. Augustine's Abbey and Rochester Castle - all are run by English Heritage, so we bought the Overseas Visitor Pass at the first location and saved a bundle. Also Whitstable is a cute seaside town - better than Herne Bay, we were told. Also saw Rochester Cathedral (free, next door to the Castle) and did a day trip to Cambridge which is where my husband and I met and married (that is under two hours each way if no traffic).

All in all, I highly recommend both Canterbury and the Old Fire Station.

“Perfect stylish Accommodation in the heart of Canterbury”
Reviewed April 6, 2014 for a stay in March 2014

I stayed at Cedar House last weekend with some friends to celebrate our 40th birthdays. It turned out to be the perfect accommodation, within short walking distance of the shops, restaurants and punting! The accommodation was modern, stylish and spacious, with a Scandinavian feel. The owner, Sebastian, couldn't have been more helpful. He was there to welcome us on arrival and quickly dealt with any queries. I would love to return!
