Four of us dined at Quex Barn, Canterbury, on a fantastic Travelzoo offer which gave us three courses and a drink for £68 for four people. Starters all tasted very nice; scotch egg and rabbit Wellington were very generous portions. The scallops with cauliflower and bacon were tasty, but very small (two and a half(!) scallops and two small shards of bacon). If we had paid £9.50 for this started we would have felt a bit miffed.
Two of us had steaks which were really good - cooked exactly as requested. Chicken pie was tasty but a bit mushy inside. The lamb hotpot was a bit disappointing - loads of slightly chewy meat but very little veg or gravy. It needed slower cooking.
Desserts were lovely, cheese board very generous. I have noticed quite a few negative comments on this site about the service, but we found the staff efficient and friendly so no complaints from us.
Overall we had a good experience and will be going back.

Food was OK, but the service was disorganised. We were served by a waiter in old jeans and dirty jumper which did rather spoil the experience. I won't be going back.

I have been here for coffee and lunch several times now. The only time I was disappointed was at New Year when the city shops had their sales. It was a Saturday lunchtime and the restaurant was so over-run with customers that the waiters couldn't really cope. This is the only time that has happened. On other occasions the staff have been efficient, friendly and helpful. The food is excellent and there is some interesting produce for sale. The restaurant stretches back quite a way and so it gives an impression of more intimate sections. There is also a log fire and from the conservatory section at the back there is a view of Canterbury Cathedral, towering majestically over surrounding buildings: always an inspiring sight. There is also a room upstairs. The décor is bright and contemporary. The location is convenient as it is down the road from the main Cathedral entrance, towards Burgate and the ring road, so in the centre of the city. My only criticisms are that there is only 1 W.C. downstairs and 1 upstairs, for the whole restaurant. Also only one size of tea/coffee is served. Nevertheless it is an excellent and convenient meeting place and a place to take a break and read the newspaper.

First time at this restaurant, but on this performance we will be back. Service was friendly and efficient. The young lady was helpful and attentive without being overpowering.
J started with a warm scotch egg with Piccalilli, and she went overboard with delight. It was cooked to perfection, egg runny, coating crisp on the outside but the meat was tender. And the Piccalilli was home made and to die for. But my starter of Scallops with crispy bacon and a cauliflower cream was unbelievably good. Three large, juicy scallops, full of flavour, exceedingly tender and cooked to perfection, and the sauce was creamy without being stodgy. Excellent.
By the way, l chose an Italian beer on cask, which was surprisingly good. Our young waitress initially suggested it and l was a little sceptical, so she gave me a small glass to test. Very refreshing with some depth.
Anyway back to the main course. We both chose the rump steak from their Quex reared beef with chips. J’s cooked medium and mine was rare. Both cooked as required and the meat was full of flavour, well hung and quite tender. The chips home made, fresh and giant, crispy on the outside and fluffy in the centre.
By the time we had finished the main we were full, but the choice of puddings enticed us back to eating.
J had the Apple charlotte with vanilla ice cream and salted caramel. A individual pudding with crisp apples and a sauce to savour. I chose the steamed pudding. Well men do! I had the steamed marmalade pud with whiskey custard and stem ginger ice cream. Scrumptious.
Definitely will return.

Visited Quex barn today on recommendation from friends. Had a lovely lunch, food is great and reasonably priced.

However it was a shame that the service did not match the quality of the food. We were brought the wrong drinks and the staff were unfriendly (nobody smiled or said thank you) and seemed a bit shambolic even though it really wasnt busy at all.

I dont like to write negative reviews on here and also like to support local businesses, and so if anything i hope the management read this and work on their customer service, as it would be great to see this place doing well.
