“Lovely big room !!”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

We stayed for two nights. We agree with the previous reviewer who complained about parking. We couldn't find any 24 hour parking so we settled for the nearest car park (north of the Marlowe Theatre)at £1.10 an hour it was quite expensive(you don't pay between 9pm and 7am)but I still had to rush out at the crack of dawn to put more money in the meter to tide us over breakfast. We realised later that whatever you put in is carried over to the next morning. We tried using the park and ride but it was closed Sundays (ho hum) The room, bed and bathroom were wonderful, very clean and spacious.Breakfast was OK but the bacon was grey rather than a healthy pink.Maybe the same frying pan and fat that had been used to fry the sausages as well as the bacon.Finding ourselves sitting side by side facing a wall (nice picture) was a first. It would have been much better facing my wife. The little lounge upstairs was a lovely little suntrap but had cobwebs in the window and an old pillow case lying on one of the chairs.Could do with a bit of TLC for the money we spent.

Luckily we was the Only ones booked so we had the place to ourselves. The place itself is large, comfy, well designed. The bathroom was amazing (loved the bath) the bed was huge and so comfy. Staff was good in the morning, couldn't hear them cleaning up and was friendly, breakfast was good and a big enough amount. Maybe a welcome booklet telling you a little more detail as to where bits our (at the house and Canterbury itself) will be sure to come back again such a lovely experience and time, we was gutted we only booked 1 night it was to nice to leave.

Needed a central place in Canterbury for 4 nights and this definitely hit the mark. Central and quiet. Room was excellent, huge comfortable bed, fab bathroom. Breakfast was fresh and cooked to order. With a great lounge area and use of kitchen if needed it really felt like a home from home. As it was a business trip the wi-fi was also very useful. Central Canterbury is pedestrianised so there is a lack of parking but as this is only a 10 minute walk to the railway station, you can leave the car at home!

The quality of the accommodation lived up to our expectations; lovely room, great big comfortable bed, and gorgeous bathroom. It was nice to be able to use the living room and kitchen, it was like staying with friends. The location was great for exploring Canterbury, although it is shame the parking in Canterbury is so poor that you have to park quite a way from the house.
I have to say the let down was breakfast. The young man was not accomplished at presenting a breakfast and although willing, was a bit slow in execution, for example the toast arrived when I had finished the rest of my breakfast. I recently stayed in a Crown Plaza Hotel for the same price, and had a a fantastic breakfast, this breakfast was slightly mean in comparison.

We spent a night in Bijou Abode and it totally exceeded our expectations, the bed was huge and the quality of the rooms, furnishing and decoration was fabulous, it was a joy to stay there, right in the middle of Canterbury centre, you really couldn't want for more, the breakfast was excellent. I wanted to move in and never leave.

We recently had a lovely weekend at the Bijou Abode and overall we were pleased with our stay. However, it is priced very much at the premium end of the market, and a few little tweaks are required if it is really to deliver on its promise.

First, the things we did like… the location is fantastic. Right in the centre of town, but no street noise. The bed is comfy, the bedroom is well laid out, and the bathroom is fantastic (loved the big bathtub and rainfall shower). There are only 2 rooms, and the second one was unoccupied so we had the lounge and kitchen to ourselves, which was great. The lounge is cosy and has a good selection of books. The entry code system worked well, and it was nice to have a personalised note and scones (albeit rather stale) waiting for us on arrival. The housekeeping couple who came in each morning to make breakfast and clean were really kind and helpful.

And the things we didn’t like so much…firstly, the breakfast. Although it was an adequate full English, it just didn’t live up to the quality of the accommodation, and the only additional thing on offer were some sad looking ‘Kellogs variety pack’ packets of cereal on the table. The toast bread was cheap and rather stale. At this price, I would have expected, for example, fresh bakery bread, fresh fruit, jams, yoghurt, granola etc… Add in the fact that the kitchen / dining area was poorly heated and extremely cold and it all added up to a rather depressing experience.

Secondly, given that the place is unmanned, a few little touches are needed to make visitors feel welcome – some tourist literature about the local area for example. Afternoon cakes would be a nice touch too, as would a selection of DVDs. A phone number for the owners is provided, but clearly marked as being for use in emergencies only - at this price the owners should be a little more willing to answer questions and provide advice, at least during working hours. To be fair, when we did call the owner with a problem (wifi) he was extremely helpful and responsive.

And finally, some things that didn’t really matter to us, but might be useful to know if you are planning a stay here:

1. Parking – there is nowhere to park right next to the house, as it is on a narrow, double yellow lined street. However, there is public parking a short walk away.
2. Stairs – the stairs to the bedrooms are steep and narrow and would not be suitable for anyone with limited mobility
3. Wifi – when it works, it works well, but during our stay it was very temperamental.
4. Check out. You will need to take your bags with you when you check out. As Bijou Abode is unmanned and uses an entry code system, there is no possibility to leave bags there while you go sightseeing on your final day. The housekeepers kindly agreed to let us back in at 2pm, but there is no guarantee that they will be able to do this.

What a wonderful surprise to discover this lovely B&B in the heart of Canterbury. The accommodation is first class. I have stayed in a number of luxury hotels over the years and this compares favourably with the best of them. It really does have a luxury feel to it....from the wet room with the heated floor and freestanding bath, to the wonderfully comfortable bed with fresh, soft linen and multiple pillows. It was also very quiet. In the morning I was gently woken at the agreed time by the maid who had cooked a full English breakfast with locally sourced food. It was a wonderful way to start the day. I'm looking forward to my next visit already.

Room Tip: Both rooms are identical. Both have Sat TV, Wi-Fi, Tea and Coffee, Super king-sized bed, luxury en-s...
