“Good you should go”

Very comfortable seats and most seats have a good view. Staff are great but as usual food and drink slightly over price. Use pub opposite for interval as you can prebook drinks and it is cheaper.

“What a treat”
Reviewed September 3, 2013 via mobile

I know it's not the old Marlowe, but this is a very good theatre to patronise. The prices are very reasonable and you can easily get there compared to trawling your way up to the west end. I think the seating arrangement is well thought out and the sound quality is excellent. The range of shows in offer is good but as always it could include more major works from London, however it comes down to whether companies can make enough money going to Canterbury. Still what is there is far better than nothing at all. Highly recommend taking in a show when in Canterbury.

“Bring Back The Old Marlowe Theatre”
Reviewed August 25, 2013

Being a resident of Canterbury, a patron of the 'Old Marlowe' and former member of 'Friends of The Marlowe Theatre' (in which £40.00 a year for a Group Membership gave you back stage tours, half price tickets on most of the top shows and to meet cast members after the show made it value for money), we would visit the Marlowe three to four times a year to see some great evening entertainment.

When the development of the Marlowe was first mentioned they promised so much; bigger stage and more seats to attract 'Top' West End Shows, to put on more shows, better facilities and everyone will love it. Sadly it’s never delivered and my first visit to the 'New Marlowe' was during the open day in October 2011 and my first impression was how claustrophobic and cramped the main auditorium is, this is not helped by the depressing dreary interior design of dark wooden cladding, which looks like cheap MDF/Melamine, and garish orange seats. It’s like you’re sitting in a McDonald's (another depressing interior design), though give McDonald's their due their seats are more comfortable. During the open day I also tried out were the best seating is. The theatre was pointing out the ‘Upper Circle’ ‘Boxes’ and ‘Slips’ and ‘Boxes 4 and 3’ of the ‘Circle’ have limited views, but I found the whole of the ‘Upper Circle’ is limited due to a rail that juts out from the balcony which extends out just enough to place it within your eye line and the front of the stage making it very distracting, this is also the same for the ‘Circle’. As for the theatre exterior this is a monstrosity of concrete and glass and spoils Canterbury’s cityscape. Since opening we've only been twice and we’re no longer Friends of The Marlowe due to a higher membership fees which now gives you very little in return (on average £2.00 off top seat prices. They still have meet the cast but call it 'Artist Talkback/Pre-Performance Talk/Good Companion Event’ some of these you are charged an additional fee).

Though the Canterbury City Council decided the old Marlowe was past it, it was light, airy and always a pleasure to visit and as mentioned put on some cracking entertainment. Overall the new Marlowe to date has not stood up to the hype that was promised, it has a dreary uncomfortable interior a diabolical exterior and the bulk of the shows been put on are just musicals or dance giving it very little variety, though the two shows we saw where entertaining. It’s a shame they can’t bring back the ‘Old Marlowe as the new Marlowe theatre has spoilt theatre going for Canterbury and I would avoid visiting and go to another theatre to see the venue, if you have no option to see your chosen venue at the Marlowe then get seats in the stalls in front of ‘Row P’ as behind row P your dazzled by low rather bright ceiling lights, though they do dim during the performances they are distracting.

“An incredible new theatre”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

Brilliant is all I can say about the experience of the Marlowe Theatre, fantastic new design, it is like the west end and broadway all rolled into one in Canterbury. Lovely view of the stage from most seats and nice bar with restuarant too. Please support your local theatre, this is a fantastic place and grab a wine before and after the show too!

“Lack of theatre staff ruined a good night out”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

I went to see the Rocky Horror Show for the first time last Saturday. Thoroughly enjoyed the show but had a bad experience with a mob of drunk women who ruined the night. No staff around to sort the problem out.
Also had people claiming that we were in their seats! No staff checking anyone in to their seats so hence the problem had to be sorted by us!
Office closed at the end of the evening and didn't think it would be fair to take it out on the bar staff.
Wrote to the theatre the following day asking why the lack of staff - have heard nothing back! No staff to answer emails either.
