Owner description: This remarkable building, housing the museum's vast collection, has lived through six centuries of the city's history. Rebuilt in its current form in 1373, it stands today as one of Canterbury's finest surviving medieval buildings. On arrival visitors are taken on a journey through time from the days when mammoths walked our coastlines to the Second World War bombings in Canterbury. From Anglo-Saxon treasures and rare Tudor finds to the 'Invicta' steam engine and even the original Bagpuss, this double-story museum and its collections capture the eclectic character of Canterbury and the wonderful things that make it the historical and cultural centre it is today.

“Well worth a visit.”

Interesting and informative museum. Get a joint ticket to cover the Roman museum as well. The museum follows a logical course which is easy to follow and is based in a very attractive old building.

“Lovely museum”
Reviewed October 13, 2013

I did not expect a lot from this museum but I was surprised to find how much I enjoyed it. Had the place almost to myself on a Thursday afternoon so it was easy to get around. The museum itself is a lovely building and one area just flows into the next, and it is bigger than you think. I especially enjoyed reading the 1980's Becket illumination frieze.

“Very interesting”
Reviewed September 14, 2013

We visited primarily to see Bagpuss and the Clangers, but thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the museum which is very 'hands on' and interesting. The facts really come to life and are illustrated well by large artworks, artifacts and activities to try. I imagine small children will enjoy it as much as we did!

“Wet weather fun”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

Great activity for a visit to canterbury on a wet day. Lots to see and do, activities for the children to get involved in too. Shows Canterbury through the ages from early settlers to modern day and has a great section on Bagpuss and Rupert Bear who both began life in or near the town.
