“Hotel with character”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2013

We have just stayed in the hotel for a weekend. It has a lot of character, comfortable beds, very clean, good breakfast. Our only problem was that we were in the attic of the annexe with 2 flights of steep stairs which we found pretty tiring as an elderly couple. The room was large but pretty airless even with the window open. I would certainly stay there again but would request a room in the main hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for main building

The hotel was lovely. Really interesting features and great atmosphere. The staff were exceptionally welcoming too. Breakfast was great but the prices at the bar were on the steep side. The room was super. The only downside was the krypton factor taps which took a while to work out! If we're ever in Canterbury again, we will come back.

We stayed at the Falstaff from 25-28 March 2013. We asked for a quiet room, which is what we got, but if we stay again, we will ask to be housed in the main building. As it was we were in Room 53 which was in an annex in the old Woodmill building behind the inn. In order to access it a code had to be punched into the door, and our room was up two quite steep flights of stairs. It was built into the roof which made it rather quirky with all sorts of angles and the only natural light was provided by two skylights. (see photo)

The weather was bitingly cold but the room was warm, reasonably large and well lit. The bathroom was also quite large but rather bleak in appearance. There was an ironing board, coffee making facilities and a flat screen television.

As well as the usual cereals and yogurts an excellent English breakfast was provided. One problem was that when the inn was full the small breakfast room could not accommodate all the guests and those who chose to come later for breakfast had to be seated in the bar until a table became free. The piped music at breakfast was a bit irritating, but only mildly so since it was kept at a subdued level. The bar is not staffed throughout the day so an assistant has to be summoned if one requires a snack or a drink.

A real plus of the inn is its location, so near to both the station and the West Gate of the city. The staff are cheerful, helpful and informative. The Falstaff is far from being a luxury hotel but it is a pleasant and comfortable base from which to explore Canterbury.

Found this on Booking.com when visiting the University. Colleagues confirmed my choice.
This hotel is perfectly situated, right by the station at at the gates of the medieval town. It is an attractive building and a typically English hotel with typically English breakfasts. It is comfortable and welcoming.
On the next visit, I found a bar of chocolate marked welcome in my room. they look after returnin guests and I keep returning. Why stay in London when a home from home is only an 1 hour and 30 minutes away from a friendly hotel in a lovely town with great pubs and wonderful Shepherd Neame beer.

Room Tip: The outbuildings have really cosy rooms, although the four poster rooms are a must.

Located close to the centre of Canterbury with its own car park which is very helpful. The hotel is reasonably priced - especially if you include the car parking.

One or two things could improve - whilst spacious the en-suite bathroom was cold with only a towel rail to (ineffectively) keep it warm. Although we were able to move the small portable radiator with the aid of an extension lead this was not really satifactory. The hairdryer was also very small and not at all powerful. I also have a pet hate for shower curtains.

Although no evening meals it is less than 5 minutes walk to a selection of restaurants and pub meals in the centre of Canterbury.

Stayed for a long weekend and were given a superior room on the first floor at the front of the hotel, very little street noise from below, rooms are big and clean. Breakfast excellent with plenty of selection. Hotel is old coaching inn so floor boards creak and has dark paneling, but is an excellent base to explore Canterbury. Staff were welcoming an very helpful.

We have been staying at the Falstaff for many years and yet I have never written a review before. It used to be a hotel in the real sense but no longer offers evening meals but does a very good breakfast and it is possible to get snacks.

Being in such close proximity to the centre with such a wide choice of restaurants I can see the logic in no longer offering a restaurant service.

The staff here are exceedingly pleasant and helful which makes up for the slightly shabby style of the hotel these days. They have been waiting on planning permission to upgrade but because of it being a historic hotel it is a long time coming.

Because of the style of the building bedrooms vary greatly in style and size but all offer a comfortable bed and plenty of hot water. Yes, there are creaking floor boards but again it goes with the style of the hotel.

This hotel also has a car park which is a real bonus as parking in Canterbury can be a nightmare.

Well done Falstaff we will be back!

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel are usually quieter.
