Excellent place to visit - make sure you have a guided tour, as these are run by local enthusiasts who can make the place 'come alive'.

Cheaper than the rest of the sites in London but just as lovely and we could at least take pictures inside. Worth the visit.

“History in stone”
Reviewed September 11, 2013

Yes, it is expensive to get in, but York Minster charges the same and these buildings are nearing 1000 years old and are very expensive to maintain. And the ticket does last all year should you want to return! It is the must-see attraction in Canterbury, so I didnt' begrudge the money.

The building itself is simply stunning. The deep blue mediaeval stained glass is unique in the UK, only being found here and at Chartres (I was told this at Chartres!).

It was difficult to get a good view of the spot where Thomas Becket was murdered, due to a large number of school parties being taught about it (surprising on the second day of term!), but happily the children weren't so interested in the amazing early mediaeval painting in the crypt, or the tombs of Henry IV and the Black Prince, whose helmet, gloves and tunic are preserved in the cathedral (replicas hang above his tomb, but the 14th century originals are on display in a glass case). It can be hard to comprehend just how old this stuff really is.

We returned in the evening (it's free from about 6pm to get in to the precincts, which close at 9pm) to see it floodlit, which was beautiful.

I would criticise the unnecessary jobsworthiness of the security guard, who refused to let two people into the grounds at 8.55pm because "we are about to close", when he could easily have let them in just for the remaining 5 mins. We were still there and he wasn't chasing us out.

“Impressive building”

Beautiful cathedral,we weren't impressed that part of the tour was out of bounds. Especially as the entrance fee was £10. But a lot to see anyway & quite moving

“Very historic”
Reviewed September 9, 2013

Although it cost a fair amount to get in I didn't mind paying the amount as they need the money as it's no longer getting charity funding. It's very historical and beautiful and the staff were great when my Grandma needed help.
