The architecture and the Building was a wonderful experience and the freedom to wander almost everywhere was pleasing. what is amazing is seeing what a nation of warmongers we British are. By far the bulk of the memorials are to dead soldiers involved in wars all over the world and places unheard of. The next are the Deans, Archbishops and canons involved in the Church of Canterbury over the Centuries. Not much chance of poor Joe Bloggs being interred here it's for the Wealthy and famous only. Still very well worth a visit.

lovely grounds, could hear the choir and orchestra practicing, which added to the atmosphere. Friendly staff and loads of history.

I reaise Canterbury is overrun with tourists (especially the dreaded and invariably so-badly-behaved French school parties) but is that any reason for the CofE authorities to have turned their cathedral into a tourist attraction for which one must pay an entry fee and follow a prescribed sightseeing route?

My advice is avoid this awful place like the plague. It has been ruined. You will not be able to appreciate the building and as for any feeling of sprituality forget it - they only want your cash.
Go to Rochester instead and see what it COULD be like.

And for those who say "Ah but, St Pauls charges and so does York", indeed they do and it is similarly unforgivable. It can never, ever be right to charge money to enter a place of worship.

I visited Canterbury for the first time ever last week and doubt if I will ever be able to return to the area. Of course the Cathedral with it's history and importance made a visit a must for me.I was very disappointed when I went to pay to be told that over half the Cathedral was not open to the general public. The Nave,Cloisters and Chapter House were all out of bounds. The price was reduced from £9-50 to £7 but that's no help to a traveler who has come hundreds of miles to see this special building. The reason was the Cathedral had been hired by the University of Kent for the whole week for their graduation ceremonies.I have many views about that but won't express them here.My warning is, if you are going to Canterbury especially to visit the Cathedral contact them first to check that this Holy building is open to the public.

Spent a very interesting few hours in this cathedral. The architecture is wonderful . Expensive to enter but I believe worth every penny.
Stained glass windows varied but interesting.
Worth a visit.
