Description: Just three doors to the left of Canterbury Cathedral Gate Canteen serves freshly made flatbreads, salads, baguettes, toasties, jacket potatos and daily hot dish / soup. Everything is made to order from freshly prepared ingredients using local suppliers wherever possible. The building dates back to around 1600 and from the windows you can get glimpses of the Cathedral (particularly from the loo !). It is a rather rickety building so you need to be OK with stairs as our seating is over three floors. We provide eat in or take away food and a large variety of hot and cold drinks including smoothies and juice pressed on the premises. Due to popularity we also now serve delicious cream teas.

“Tasty, healthy and good value”

I eat here every week mainly choosing from the wraps special board. I order a small wrap to take away and pay around £3.50. I would recommend this to everyone to try.

“Quirky, quaint and quite delicious”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2013

Would have given it a five had cous-cous been ready and available....

Arrived on Easter Saturday at about 11:30am for an early lunch having been in the snow-flurried City of Canterbury since 8:30am. The service was friendly, welcoming and polite. Interestingly shaped put-your-menu together idea, as well as some ready-to-order options. In the absence of a cous-cous base, I opted for a falafel and houmous wrap and a strawberry 'winter warmer' smoothie (although this was a bit of a misnomer as there was nothing warm or wintry about it). Nevertheless, it and the wrap were absolutely top notch fare. The ingredients tasted really fresh; there wasn't too much of something overpowering other flavours. The smoothie was really great with a very mild tartness cutting through the sweetness so as not to make it feel sickly. It went down a treat.

The stairs at Canteen are steep and narrow and and full of charm with modern, basic quasi-kitsch furniture - plastic bucket seats and brightly coloured pouffes. Would appeal to pretentious, trying-to-be-cool, middling-class couples (like us) and students.

A toasted sandwich with coffee and a wrap with a smoothie was 50p shy of £20, so not cheap for a small lunch, but by no means expensive either given the interesting and tasty food.

All in all, a real treat and would definitely eat there again. Cous-cous at the ready, it might even get a might five next time.

“Best place for lunch in Canterbury!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 28, 2013

I eat/work in Canterbury and have eaten in most places for lunch, i absolutely love Canteen. Everything is fresh, they have a great variety, there are generous portions and the staff are lovely. You may pay a small amount more than you would at Subway or any other generic chain, but you get 10x the quality. I recommend getting a pasta salad, you choose any deli and 3 vegetables/extras and a sauce... it tastes great.

“The best ingredients well prepared”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2013 via mobile

Work takes me into Canterbury on a reasonably regular basis. Whenever I can I pop in to have lunch. From flatbreads, to curries they're all delicious. I love their winter food especially the soups.

The ingredients are fresh, all food is made on the day & you can taste it. You know it's good value for money when the students are around. You can take out or eat in & it's located right near the Cathedral for all the tourists.

My favourite modern hippy spot.
