“Trip to Canterbury”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 21, 2013

Arrived Sunday lunch time to a very warm welcome. Parked the car ( Free! ) in their spacious and lovely garden. The house in just outside to out town by the wonderful west gates.
We shown around the hotel and all the facilities and given access to our rooms very early.
Everything was very friendly and beautifully clean.
This is a very ancient house and our room was a bit cramped but was made up for by the service with a smile and chat.
The bar was run on an honesty box ( and the prices were very reasonable )
On the day of departure we were able to leave the car in the car park until we finished our visit to the museums of Canterbury

The only comment I would have is that the décor was a bit eccentric to say the least. It is an historic house and I felt that some restrained neutral colours and traditional furnishings would have enhanced its beauty more than a changing rooms themed approach. Still we had a wonderful stay and thanks to all at the hotel.

Breakfast was wonderful

Room Tip: Choose the larger room if you are staying longer than a couple of nights

Stayed here with our American friends who were visiting us for three weeks. So pleased I chose this hotel and they loved it. Sandie and her team are so welcoming and you can feel the history of the place. We stayed in the Venice room and loved its quirkiness (the bathroom was in the bedroom, but the loo was separate) and we loved it. Our friends were in the Stables block, which is very modern and they loved it too. The breakfasts were good and we would certainly stay here again if we are in the area.

Room Tip: the Venice Room overlooks the lovely garden

If you're going to Canterbury, stay here! Sandi is such a delightful innkeeper and has added so much to make your stay comfortable. She has an honor bar off the lobby where you can get soda and drinks (and at prices much less than a pub, with a better selection). The breakfast is lovely and you'll be served by cheerful people. There are DVD players in the rooms and she has a collection of video's you can check out. Just a lot of touches to soothe the weary traveler. Also, ask her for tips on where to have dinner, etc.

Room Tip: Just talk to Sandi. She's so helpful and will steer you in the right direction. Stair access o...

The House of Agnes offers the absolute best treatment of any B&B in the area. Every time we have stayed here, Sandie de Rougemont and her staff have gone way out of their way to insure that we have the most special stay we can have. From the warm and personal welcome to room preparation to city guides for our bike rides, the personal touch is always there. We could not think of any other place to stay in Canterbury.

Room Tip: All the rooms are special and renovated with soundproof windows but our favorite is the Venice room...

My wife and I just stayed two nights and we just had a wonderful stay. We were in the Canterbury room which although at the front is very quiet. But it so typifies the place that ear plugs are provided just in case. The room is beautiful, four poster bed, very romantic but if you want a bath rather than a shower, you'll need a different room. Even a copy of 'David Copperfield'....Sandy the host makes the whole place so special. So welcoming, so meticulous. You can borrow a DVD copy of her in Four in a bed'....here, great fun to watch. For our foreign visitors, it's a B & B contest!). There's a really well stocked honesty bar, breakfast is lovely and the service is superb....

Thank you Sandy and all the staff, one of the nicest places we've ever stayed in....

Room Tip: Ask if you'd like a bath rather than a shower...

Stayed for 3 nights in the Stables. Everything in the room was of the highest standard and the jacuzzi bath was an added bonus. The breakfasts were excellent and the choice was great. The honesty bar is an original idea with a wide choice of soft and alcoholic drinks. The staff made us feel really welcome and will definitely return if we are in the area

A hidden gem we enjoyed the garden, the roof terrace associated to the room. The honesty bar was very welcoming and good to have some extra space without having to go into the hussle and bussle of the town. Breakfast was great for veggies like me - but shame that the grumpy waitress was having a bad day as the rest of the staff were a real delight.

Would definitely go back!!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Marakech room perfect for a couple travelling with a teen who stayed in the ensuite...

Thank you for your kind review and for your appreciation of my 'quirky' establishment. I admit to being very self-indulgent as far as decor is concerned!
I am a veggie myself so I make sure non-meat eaters are catered for and provisions are made for gluten-free and lactose intolerant guests as well.
I'm sorry about the grumpy waitress at breakfast. In fact she has braces on her teeth and is very self conscious about smiling which perhaps gives the wrong impression. I'm glad the rest of my smiley team made up for her though!
Kindest regards and hope to see you again in the future.
