We have just returned from a week at Rose Cottage. This turned out to be an excellent choice and we would unreservedly recommend a stay here. The location on the front overlooking the harbour is perfect especially for people unfamiliar with The Isles of Scilly. The view from the cottage is over the bay to Tresco,Samson and St.Martins. This is the"working" beach in Hugh Town and the place from which all the trip boats to the off islands depart. The Scillonian berths here and it is an easy flat walk from Rose Cottage. As first timers we were anxious to visit as many other islands as possible and we found this cottage was the perfect base. Hugh Town is the place to stay unless you want a longer walk or can work around the times for the Community bus.
Rose Cottage has 3 letting rooms. The twin/double is on the ground floor by the road. This was not a problem - some cars went past during the day but we heard nothing at night. It was lovely to pop out of the door in the evening and go and sit on one of the many benches overlooking the harbour. Sunsets from here are fantastic. We were lucky and had several. The room we were in had a large well appointed bathroom with good shower over the bath. In keeping with the fact that this is a cottage the bedroom was small but cosy. It would have been nice to have an easy chair to sit in but space didn't allow. This didn't matter to us as we had excellent weather and only really used the room for sleeping. If it had rained all week I wouldn't have been so happy without a chair.
The owners,Karen and Jeremy, make you feel at home and are happy to answer any questions. Karen cooks a lovely breakfast (smoked haddock was a nice change from her perfectly cooked Full English) which is served at 8:30am. This is to fit in with the departures of the daily boat trips which begin leaving between 9:45 to around 10:30. Jeremy is a member of the Boatmens association. He visits you as you eat each morning and explains which trips will be running that day. You also get a good weather forecast for the day!
Rose Cottage is perfect for visiting a different island each day. If the weather is ok you may be able to do the trip out to Bishop's Rock lighthouse. Don't miss this one if you get the chance. Seals everywhere on the way back and tales of all the shipwrecks! The Abbey Gardens on Tesco are magnificent as are the beaches on St Martin's island, the tranquility of St Agnes and the beauty of Bryher. Each is perfect in a different way. St Mary's too is a lovely island but much larger and so harder to walk around. An old fashioned bus goes from near Rose Cottage and gives a taste of the island. Portcressa beach is a 2 minute walk away.
There are lots of places to eat in Hugh Town. Our favourite was the Kavorna Bistro - a good menu with everything very freshly prepared. We thought that this was the best by far of the places we tried.
If you want a relaxing holiday this is the place. Likewise if you want long walks. Not a place for rampant nightlife - thank goodness!! Having said that there was a local theatre group that put on an Agatha Christie play. Very entertaining.
We would happily return to The Isles of Scilly and would love to stay again at Rose Cottage. I couldn't find any reviews of the place before we booked. As a Trip Advisor fan I always go by reviews posted so here is the first!
