Popped in here for a quick lunch while out shopping. It was a bitterly cold Saturday and we really fancied warming up with a bacon sandwich!

What a choice we made! This is a lovely little cafe/bistro with a varied yet fairly short menu, freshly baked items and freshly prepared food.

It's difficult to make a dreadful bacon sandwich but equally difficult to make an outstanding one. Somehow Canteen manage to make a splendid specimen with freshly baked, proper bread, perfectly cooked bacon and accompany it with rich, strong coffee and smiley, attentive service. All for a reasonable price!

Canteen is a gem in St. Albans and unusual in hitting all the important boxes. If you haven't been, go and if you have? Go again!

We took a stroll down to Canteen for lunch after reading the reviews on here. Away from the hustle and bustle but only a short 5 minute walk from the town centre, it was more than worth the very small amount of extra effort required! Our lunch was delicious - frittata and eggs/avocado/roasted tomatoes on toast followed by mince pies and brownies. Everything was so fresh and perfectly cooked with special attention to flavour and seasoning. I love the quirky retro setting and friendly, attentive staff. The place feels like a real find and we'll be going back.

We all enjoyed our food in this cafe with a retro vibe. We had been all around the town centre looking for somewhere we fancied for lunch and this was the one we'd seen first of all so glad we discarded the rest! The service was relaxed and friendly. The food very enjoyable: toasted cheese sandwich (which my daughter who is a connoisseur of such said it was the best she had ever had), frittata, Caesar salad and aubergine wrap. Very well placed on the route from the town centre to the abbey and well worth a visit.

Visited this hidden cafe a couple of times for brunch. Always warmly welcomed. Really lovely coffee, and tasty freshly prepared food. Inside area a little small, but there is also a covered heated seating area outside, which is nice. Service friendly and prices very reasonable.

Very good food for brunch including smoke salmon & poached eggs on toast. Also homemade specials such as apricot crumble muffin. The staff were very good and friendly.
