“Dining At Chez Mumtaj Is A Great Experience.”
Reviewed October 25, 2010

Dining at Chez Mumtaj is a great experience. They pay attention to each and every detail. The food is an amazing blend of French/Indian and each dish is plated up with precision. The service is attentive but not over the top, helping to achieve a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere. We can especially recommend the Duck Samosas with a beautiful Hoi Sin Sauce, the Lamb Bakhura and the 5 Lentil Vegetable side order.

“Good food, poor service”
Reviewed October 23, 2010

Went with my lady, who is Indian, so she got an inside handle on the set up. The owner is buried down in the kitchens producing some very good food. What he desperately needs is a competent front-of-house manager. Service was dismal. Booking made had not been recorded. Stood around for over ten minutes waiting for the drinks we had ordered while they were sorting out a table without being offered anywhere to sit in the meantime. Waited an hour for our starters - to be fair they did provide some per-starter 'nibbles' after half an hour as an apology for that delay. When starter did arrive the waiter had got part of the order wrong. Another wait for the correct one - though a complementary drink was offered as recompense. Manager came over to apologise. Partner translated the conversation they had had. Manager had simply spent his time dissing the competency of the staff, with no seeming recognition that the supervision and training of staff should be a responsibility that stops with him. The food combined with efficient well delivered service would just about be worth the cost, which was fairly pricey. As it was the experience as a whole was not value for money. Would not use this place again until front-of-house is shaken up and reaches decent standards.

“Too slow, too little, too expensive”
Reviewed October 5, 2010

Invited by my son, who believed the Top Table reviews were good, we arrived first and found the restaurant empty but for one table of ten. My son's booking was not in the diary yet he had emailed us his booking confirmation. We spent our time being questioned about the lost booking instead of being offered any drinks. As other guests arrived they too were not approached to see if they needed drinks. Confusion followed regarding moving to our table and more confusion followed regarding orders. We all selected the set lunch, and after a long wait some of the starters were quite good. After another very long wait the main couses arrived but were very small and unexceptional. A lot of bread was ordered to try to make up for this. I can not stess strongly enough how small the set lunch is, but to illustrate this a four year old finished two couses plus half a nan bread yet needed a real meal only two hours later. Now to the price; the set meal total came to £60, and we had to spend over half this again on very expensive bread.

“Terrible”
Reviewed September 19, 2010

We read the good reviews before going and had high hopes.. but to our dismay it didnt turn out that way! ~It took over 40 mins to be taken to our table, once there it took another 20 mins to get our orders and a further 45 mins till our starters landed on our table. Very frustrating for a restaurant that has 1 rosette and is supposedly renowned for the service... hmm

There was no canape's or amuse to keep us occupied, once we complained about the wait they took us something to nibble on but that took us getting out our chairs and wondering round to do that and it was impossible to get anyones attention.

Scallops were overcooked and the foie gras was cold but the rest of the food was lovely. On top of that though they tried to charge us service charge just to rub it it....

Wouldn't go back as there are a lot of places A LOT better and cheaper.
