Owner description: St Albans Cathedral is the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain. It stands over the place where Alban, the first martyr, was buried after giving his life for his faith over 1700 years ago.The building itself is a blend of architectural styles spanning a millennia and contains recycled Roman bricks from Verulamium. Of special interest are the 13th century wall paintings, a rare watching loft and the shrines of Saint Alban and Amphibalus, the priest who converted Alban to Christianity.

We took the free 2:30pm tour on a Sunday. The Cathedral was very busy with Christingle but our guide (who had huge knowledge and a very developed sense of humour) gave us a tremendous tour of this fascinating and unusual building.

If you are ever in St Albans, you must visit the cathedral.
It is so picturesque and so serene inside.
It doesnt cost, although they have donation points.
There are daily tours which I think are also free.

The surroundings are lovely to - set in the park and only a short walk from a lovely pub.

I first went to a carol concert which was quite moving. I have subsequently had the opportunity to browse and found so many interesting objects.

As a St Albans resident I have been here lots of times. There is so much to see and it is easy enough to access being close to the town centre. Best to park in one of the town centre carparks though as no real parking on site. Lovely walled garden beside the cathedral and lots of great restaurants and coffee shops close by. Great gift shop fully of quality items and a visit to the coffee shop is a must. Welcoming.

A Cathedral with so many interesting things to see and absorb. Mercifully free from hordes of visitors too - unlike Cathedrals in capital cities the world over - so you can find places for quiet contemplation. You might get the bonus of visiting on a Saturday morning when Hertfordshire Chorus are rehearsing - I did on my second vist and was able to listen to this wonderful choir rehearsing for their evening's concert. Just wish I could have stayed longer.
