Owner description: Verulamium Park is a public park in the City of St Albans, Hertfordshire. Along with being a wide open area for recreational purposes, the park includes all that is left of a Roman settlement from which the park takes it's name. The large amount of history on view in the park has resulted in a museum dedicated to the Historic Roman heritage upon which St Albans has been built. The park also includes a long list of facilities including; Tennis courts, sand courts, football and cricket pitches, An athletics track and field facility, a golf course, childrens play area, outdoor childrens Splash Park, a large leisure facility called westminster lodge Leisure Centre which contains a gym and indoor swimming pool, a cafe, a large lake fed by the River Ver, plenty of provision for picnics and family activities and what is thought to be the oldest and one of the most famous public houses in England called The Fighting Cocks. Overlooking the entire area is the St Albans Abbey, a large cathedral dating back to 1077AD. The park is an epicentre of greenery and wildlife and it is a hub of social and recreational activity that the people of St Albans can be extremely proud of.

So beautiful and cool on a hot day. The park is large with parts of the old Roman Wall and the hypocaust (Roman system of heating under floor on display in small museum) easily found. There is a licensed cafe, splash pool for the children, playing areas, lots of grass.

“Great day out”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

Great day out with big open spaces and a lovely lake with ducks on for the kids to feed. My toddler lovers the splash park which can get a bit over crowded in the summer months.

“Never Tire Of This Place”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

The recent fine weather made this a must for us. We usually park the car in King Harry Lane, opposite the Waitrose supermarket, and then stroll across the Park, taking in the excellent views of the Cathedral and surrounding area.

The city itself is an interesting place, plenty of old character properties (Fishpool Street is a good example) and of course the Cathedral is a must-see. There was a small Magna Carta exhibition there when we visited, with one of the original documents on display. Admission charge but well worth it.

Any number of lunch places here, in good weather we like to sit outside one of the cafés in the narrow streets and watch the world go by.

If you're interested in the ancient history aspect, you have the Verulamium Museum, the Hypocaust, and the Roman Theatre just the other side of Bluehouse Hill.

Young families are also well catered for in the Park, so there is something for everyone here.

We're very fortunate to be living just a short drive away, and a stroll around the Park costs nothing. For anyone not familiar with the area, it's worth mentioning that on Sundays you can park in the city centre multi-storey free of charge.

“Splash Park - Verulanium Park St Albans”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

Fantastic splash park for children up to twelve years old. My 5 and 7 year old absolutely loved it, plus there is a big park with swings, slides, climbing frames and occasionally a small circus near by. The Inn on the Park was clean and served reasonable food, albeit not cheap and there is loads of space for everybody so your not too crammed in with other people.
Would go back again
