If you are looking for quiet night's sleep, avoid this hotel. We booked a quiet room in advance, then checked in early at 13h30 (official check-in 15h00) to confirm that a quiet room had been reserved for us. The desk clerk confidently assured us that we had been allocated a quiet room on the top floor away from the lifts, and when we returned at 19h00 it would be ready for us. We were actually put in a room on the first floor and discovered that the hotel had old, creaking floorboards both in the corridor and the room above us. We went to see the duty manager and he said this was unfortunate but there were no quiet rooms available. That was it (take it or leave it, essentially)
The hotel had a number of evening wedding receptions on and we had to listen to late-night partying guests, followed by the people in the room above us arriving back at 02h30 and walking over the creaking floorboards for around 40 minutes.
A nightmare.

I spent 4 nights at Sopwell House on business as part of a corporate group. I was in a standard room with a view of the parking lot. Rooms on the other side of the hallway have a more pleasant view of the gardens. The room was a decent size with a desk and a chair in addition to the bed. The bed, although it was 2 twins pushed together, was very comfortable, as were the pillows. The bathroom seemed new and was very clean and had a heated towel rack.
I appreciated having coffee, tea, hot chocolate and cookies in the room.
There is free wireless internet access throughout the hotel, and the connection was fast and reliable.
There were no clocks in the room, so you must depend on a wake-up call. On the first morning, my wake-up call came an hour earlier than requested. I guess that’s better than an hour late!

My only complaints with this hotel are:
1. Every night our room keys had to be reprogrammed. This happened to everyone in our group of approximately 25 people – sometimes it took 3 tries before the key worked. The front desk staff tried to tell us it was our fault – that we must be keeping the key next to our cell phones or something else that would interfere with the magnetic programming of the key. However, I am always careful to keep magnetic room keys in a separate pocket where it won’t come in contact with anything else that could affect it. We were all very frustrated with having to deal with this every night after long days of meetings.
2. Upon checkout, I was surprised to find out that I was being charged for the daily newspaper that was delivered to my door. If I had been told that there was an extra charge for the newspaper up front, I would not have gotten it.

Whilst you can see if you look carefully why this is not a five star resort, it is a great place to stay for a relaxing break.

The room was a good size, clean and in good order. The service was generally good and attentive. However there are parts of the hotel that could do with a bit of an update.

The Spa was well integrated into the hotel and nice but not really up to the standard of the rest of the premises, the changing areas were more communal baths than luxury hotel - the management would do well to emulate an environment similar to a modern gym such as a Holmes Place/Virgin Active. However the treatments were good, the pool, sauna and steam room were nice and we still happily made use of the facilities.

In short, this is actually a really good hotel but it could be great. We're definitely looking forward to returning as soon as we are able to.

Excellent hotel with spa and indoor pool. Light and airy. Staff were attentive and welcoming but not over burdening. Drinks a little pricey. all in all an expense well spent....enjoy !

My sister and I booked this hotel for a 60th birthday present for our mum. The hotel very kindly allowed us (3 adults) to share a room. After reading the many negative reviews on trip advisor I very nearly cancelled our booking - I am so pleased that I didnt. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left, I couldnt have asked for more attentive service. ALL the staff without exception were happy, friendly and willing to help. The room we were given was beautiful and plenty big enough. The beds, duvets, pillows etc were very comfortable and the bathroom was very nice. All meals were of a very high standard and there was never very long to wait for any order. I do feel that the cocktails were very overpriced. Our spa treatments were reasonably priced and wonderfully relaxing. Our treatments commenced at exactly the time they were booked for and the staff in the spa were highly skilled and efficient. The pool area was relaxing, although more sun loungers are required as towels (not bodies) occupied all of the beds, all of the time! Maybe a system should be put in place for people not being able to reserve beds. I would highly recommend this hotel.

I have just returned from a weekend break - what a stunning place. The staff were very attentive and the service could not be faulted. The room we stayed in was clean, modern and well equipped. The SPA was a pleasure to be in and the treatment I had was excellent. Would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

My girlfriend and I fancied splashing out so booked ourselves in here for a romantic weekend night away.

It was great to be greeted by friendly, obliging staff. It was less good to be confronted with gaggles of girls on hen weekends. The sound of hen night frolicks filled the corridors late in to the night/morning... not exactly the relaxing detox we were hoping for.

The room was comfortable enough, if a bit shabby when it came to the furniture. The bed was enormous and seemed comfortable enough, until we realised it was two singles pushed together.

Service in the bar was prompt and courteous, but breakfast in bed was less impressive... they got our order was wrong, the food was cold, portions were far from generous and the whole experience seemed somewhat over-priced.

Access to the spa and swimming pool was a big bonus, though in the afternoon the pool reverberated with the sound of childrens' screams. Lots of them.

The setting is pleasant, though the grounds are very small. Don't expect it to look like a quaint country manor -- the majority of the hotel was built some time in the second half of the 20th century. At lease you can't see the building when you're inside it.

All in all it wasn't a disaster, but nor was it as fancy as the room rate would suggest. And Sopwell's definitely geared up for groups and families rather than romantic weekends away.
