“Good Value Accomodation in St Albans”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 21, 2012

We stayed here recently to have a night out in St Albans and the accomodation was exactly what we needed. The rooms are comfortable and clean although the single (Room 7) is fairly small. The pub is in an ideal location for exploring St Albans and has the added bonus of having its own car park at the rear. Don't turn up in a Chelsea tractor though as the old coach entrance is quite narrow.

The staff were friendly and helpful giving us advice on where to go. The only disappointment was when we returned to eat later in the evening (an A-board outside advertised food 'til 9pm) we were told they don't serve food on a Saturday night. Put the A-board away then!

Breakfast in the morning was Ok and served by friendly staff. Would definitely consider staying again as I don't think you will get better value for money in St Albans.

The pub is lovely, full of locals, and the owners could not be more friendly (the lady who serves the breakfast is a treat), and the room was perfectly clean, HOWEVER the mattress in the room we stayed in was just appalling, and as the bed is really what I'm paying for I just can't rate this place very highly.
The shared shower was broken when we were there too.
The location in St Albans is lovely, though.

I have been using the hotel since October 2010, the accomadation is good and a very competitive price, the bar is excellent and the food quality second to none. The locals are a friendly crowd and the bar staff always give you a warm welcome

Thought this would be a nice B&B for a weekend away with friends, but was really disappointed. We aren't fussy, and to be fair the linen/towels were clean, but overall this place sucked:

- very, very loud disco in bar below went on until about 4am
- recurrent smoke/fire alarm throughout night
- an old newspaper and lipstick in the bedside drawer
- vegetarian breakfast very sparse
- shower barely trickled water out

I thought we had droped on a total gem of place to stay in lovely St Albans. A cosy friendly pub with B&B at a good price close to the city centre. I knew we only had a twin room but I thought it as a en suite room.

On arrival we were told that we were in room 1 and the bathroom as right next door. Not quite what we expected but thought no more about it really. No one said it was a shared facility so what was the issue? How wrong could we be,? It seemed almost all other people in the B&B, and indeed pub, used this bathroom! Sharing bathrooms with strangers isn’t something most people relish especially when they shower and leave ‘curly hair ‘ in the bath!!!!

The bedroom itself was really nice, warm and cosy with lots of tea and coffee items, clean and really quaint.

The breakfast on the Saturday was lovely served by a really lovely lady while we sat in front of a warm fire. We asked for a slightly later breakfast on the Sunday, 09:00 rather than 08:30, and were told that would be fine,

Come the Sunday morning we arrived down stairs at 09:05 to find everywhere locked up. The cleaner appeared who offered to knock the breakfast guy up! At 09:15 he finally arrived apologising for having had a late night and he was clearly hung over. Really his punishment was having to cook breakfasts in this state!. We had to ask for fruit juice and there was no milk or sugar on the tables – we shared our milk with the next table but they seemed to know the hung over guy and just accepted this is how it was.

When the breakfast did finally arrive at 09:45 it was good so at least that was a saving grace.

It is hard for hoteliers at the moment so you’d think they would want to offer a really good service to all of their guests . It is such a shame this great pub doesn’t understand the value of the B&B guest. We won’t be returning to stay but we would visit for a drink as the pub really is great.
