“A Real Slice of Old England”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 3, 2008

This hotel feels a World away from modern society and I loved it. This hotel is set on the main street of the small Herefordshire own of Ledbury.
It is English eccentricities at their greatest. The Book Club meet on a Tuesday and the Rotary Club on a Wednesday the sign tells you on the door on the way in!
The hotel has uneven floors, creaking floorboards, wooden beams and small knooks and crannies everywhere.
The greeing from reception was warm and friendly and I was even offered help to my room with my bags.
My room was small but well equipped, with of course the floor angled uphill toward the bed. The mattress was a little soft and felt like a hammock, but at least it had a canopy over the bed!
The bathroom was small but well equipped with a powerful shower.
At around 6pm every night a chamber maid comes round and asks if you would like your bed turning down (the sheets anyway), which again was most refreshing!
The breakfast was OK, with an exceptional cooked breakfast but a little disappointing cereal buffet.
The bar had a welcoming atmosphere and served good food and drink if a little expensive. There were also open fires and comfortable chairs all over the ground floor.
The hotel also has a leisure club although I did not venture into it, as I was too busy people watching and enjoying the comfortable surroundings.
This is a great hotel to stay at for a true English experience so rare in this Multi-Cultured Society we live in!

I have stayed one night at The Feathers every january since 2000
I go to Eastnor nearby shooting. I have found it consistently good and I stay in good hotels up and down the Country during the shooting season.
The evening menu has always provided a reasonal choice and service is good.
A more than half decent wine list.
Some of the rooms are a bit creaky but ooze character.
I have found the breakfast mostly good, service was slow on one occasion 3 years ago. (they will not serve beans to my young sons disgust), but so be it.
The Hotel looks good feels right and is above average.
A bit pricy for the average working man, but you're worth a bit more when its for pleasure

Originally built in16thcentury with tudor timbered beams.Cosy lounge with pine logs burning in the fireplace.

So called super bedroom was comfortable but nothing exceptional which could support an extra £25 per night except we had only one flight of stairs to climb as hotel had no lifts.

Overall price charge of £150 for a double with breakfast was excessive relative to other hotels in similar locations. Charges were based on occupancy rather than the rooms rate which is a disapppointing throwback to the past .

Breakfast menu was interesting with good selection.

Did not eat dinner there as adequate meals available at 1/3rd of their prices in a nearby inn.

Stayed October 2007

I travel the world, and am lucky enough to be able to stay in 5 star hotels. However, I have to say that the Feathers Hotel is one of the most delightful hotels I've ever stayed in.

Why?

Because the staff and management made my stay so enjoyable. If I could mark the staff 10 our of 5, I would. And, when you're away from home (sadly, I was a flood victim), being made to feel welcome by hotel staff is so important.

The rooms were well equipped, the food delicious and, although I didn';t have time to visit, I understand the pool area was warm and well-equipped.

Well done the Feathers - ignore the doubters, they don't know any better!

Phil

We found this gem of an hotel whilst driving through Herefordshire on our way to Wales. Luckily they had a cancellation and we were offered a double en suite room, full of beams and character at the back of the hotel

The room was spotless and had everything one might need when away from home. The furnishings a mix of contemporary and traditional.

A quick drink in the bar listening to the chat between locals, other guests and staff proved to be a foretaste of what was to come. The staff were helpful, smiled and seemed to take a genuine interest in everyone.

Supper, in their popular brasserie, was delicious.

Next morning a swim in the heated indoor hotel pool followed by an English breakfast served by yet another smiling member of staff.

Our stay at The Feathers was reflected in the whole atmosphere of the hotel. The owner/managers have obviously done a great job in selecting and training their staff as well as spending time caring for this lovely old building.

Next time we will stay for more than one night.

Ledbury is a gem of a town, and despite its proximity to the M50/M5 motorway, relatively unspoiled with a wealth of half-timbered buildings and a stunning church. The Feathers is a classic right on the High Street -- it's an old-fashioned hotel, a coaching inn dating from 1600, and really the type of small town hotel that used to exist all over England when I was growing up, but which seems to have largely vanished.

Service was excellent; my flight from Spain had been diverted from Birmingham and I advised that I would be arriving latish. I was ushered with great courtesy into the dining room at 21h25, five minutes before closing, and was able to select an excellent dinner from the well-presented menu. Food and wine were of high standard. Room: less good, in that it was full of lovely quirky charm, but cluttered with some indifferent quality furniture. Still, just the one demerit from EXCELLENT to ABOVE AVERAGE.

Ample parking at the rear. Breakfast next morning was a treat - perfectly cooked (grilled, not fried) bacon/sausage etc., and poached eggs.

Public areas are on the plus side of adequate.

The location cannot be bettered, and the overall impression this hotel makes is very positive. Pity about the clutter in the room.
