“Lovely 2 Night Stay”
Reviewed April 1, 2014

We have a very nice 2 night stay at the Green Dragon. Yes, the hotel is slightly jaded in some areas, but the hotel was clean and the facilities were good. There were some holes in the bedspread, there were enough towels and the quality of which was very good. The staff were all friendly and helpful.

We only ate breakfast at the hotel, and if I were to stay again, then we may not choose this option. Breakfast was fully self service, apart from the toast placed on your table. Unfortunately this resulted in lukewarm coffee in a flask and I have to say, was not the most enjoyable.

The location of the hotel is perfect, practically in the town centre. We were lucky enough to park the car in the small car park that is free to hotel guests.

An enjoyable stay and we would stay again.

As this was our 2nd stay I knew not to expect luxury, but on arrival they put us in room 243 it was grim and depressing.
After going down to reception Ricky found us a better one room 308. It was right at the top of the building so no view as such but it was bright and comfy.
We ate in the restaurant the 1st night or at least I tried to. The food was not good at all.
My hubby tried the curries all of which he said was tasteless I had the turkey with some roasties and watery gravy all of which was lukewarm and again tasteless.
The breakfast in the morning again was not hot at all. I don't think the cook knows how to use a temperature probe!!
The saving grace of this hotel is the location you will not get better.
I would definatly stay here again but just eat out.

Our ‘welcome’ from the guy on Reception was “your name please”. No “hello”, no smile, and we got the impression he wasn’t happy being interrupted from his computer – not a great start.

The first impression of our room was of the floor: to say it creaked and moved is an understatement. We later discovered that one of the three ceiling lights and the over-mirror light in the bathroom didn’t work, and there was a shortage of power sockets. Nor was there any ‘hotel info’ booklet, not even anything about fire drills.

I wanted a bath, but the water, while hot, was the terracotta-coloured. It showed no signs of improving after a couple of minutes of letting it run, so we went to Reception to report it. The response was that they had had this problem before – in which case, why hadn’t they done anything about it? We were advised that it could take 15-20 minutes for the water to run clear, by which time the bath itself was filthy.

Next, we went to the restaurant for dinner, which according to the only leaflet in our room would be a carvery ‘served nightly’. This proved to be a fallacy, unless you count a few slices of cooked pork and some gravy left in a bain-marie. The whole meal was a buffet, mostly a type of Asian (neither Indian or Chinese particularly), and all pretty tasteless. There were samosas, spring rolls and garlic mushrooms among the starters, but all of these had been left in the buffet trays so long that they had (a) stuck to the metal, and (b) gone soft and floppy. Not particularly nice at all.

And so to bed. And I have to say that I have never spent a night on such a hard mattress, nor with such solid and uncomfortable pillows. There were no mattress or pillow protectors, just a blanket under the bottom sheet, which is not at all hygienic, and the duvet was only just big enough to cover us both without allowing extra ‘room for manoeuvre’ as we tossed and turned in the night.

Our sleepless night was completed by the people in the room above us – not their fault, but judging from the noise, their room had the same issues with a creaky floor as ours did.

I can’t comment on breakfast as we left before service started.

Rooms were very outdated, freezing cold. The shower was slow and slightly warm. Bedspread had lots of holes and carpet extremely worn. The rooms are so outdated it feels like your stepping back in time. Most staff were great except for the dark haired extremely unhelpful man on desk. Breakfast wasn't great clearly re heated over and over. Fantastic location just shame about the state of the hotel.

Unfortunately this hotel has seen better days. It should be the best hotel in Hereford. It certainly has the best location right in centre near the Cathedral. However it is so dated. A lick of paint, updated furnishings are so needed. Room was cold, heating not efficient. Shower in room very poor and no heat working in bathroom. However is was reasonably comfortable ( as the weather was not too cold) and we paid £50 per twin room so good if want a hotel on a tight budget. Breakfast £6.95 so not expensive. Lounge full of very comfortable sofas but bar looks like something out of 1970's. .

Room Tip: Ask for one with heating!

This hotel could be so much better with a bit of maintenance and enough staff to provide a decent service. We couldn't bring ourselves to have breakfast on the second morning as it had been so chaotic on the first day it was painful to watch. Room was clean but dated. Bathroom in need of refurbishment. However hotel has character.

We have just had a wonderful stay at this hotel. Yes the bedrooms need some refurbishment such as new carpets and chairs in the bedrooms but the overall appearance is lovely. The restaurant is lovely and the breakfast is help yourself offering a full array of English food. The staff are very friendly and the bar at night was great. Great locality for the City centre. The only disappointment was the car park. Too small for the size of Hotel. We ended up paying £8 for the car park next door so that we could get in and out during the day. Don't go next door to the Thai restaurant for a meal. We were ripped off by the price on the menu for a set meal for 2. Food was good but not worth the £54 we were charged. The beer in the pubs were great. Never tasted good beer anywhere else. The Imperial Pub is a must. Great food and beer. Would defo come here again but would ask for front location as back view is poor. Lovely staff.
