“A Night in Hereford”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

My wife and I used a KGB Deal Voucher for a one night stay at this hotel on a B&B basis (with a glass of wine each if we had dinner). Our room was very pleasant and overlooked the street below which was bustling with activity but not intrusive (noise wise) Staff were very pleasant and our check in (and out) was very welcoming. As we were mid-week customers the hotel was quiet on this particular evening and it was goiod to know we could have the room from 2.00pm until vacation the following day by 12 noon. We did have dinner which was very nicely cooked (and portions were plentiful) and the vegetable selection was freshly cooked and colourful in its presentation. Breakfast was adequate but sadly not that inspiring (admittedly we were perhaps one of the last few residents down so buffet not replenished to its full extent). Only egg dish was scambled egg (on Buffet) but we expect that other types of cooking them were available (if we had asked). The hotel is obviously well used and popular and it shows its wear and tear in many places. Some areas could do with a good 'in-depth clean'. The Gents Public Toilets on the Ground Floor really do need a bit of TLC. (Broken Tiles/New Toilet Seats/New Sealant around toilet pans in cubicles) Whilst they were fit for purpose they were very 'off-putting' and not a good advert. (New Seats would only be a few pounds each and would look so much better). Overall we enjoyed our stay and would use the hotel again if another deal came along. As to whether or not we would book without a deal (which was good value) that remains to be seen. The hotel was very centrally located and we were able to leave our car in the hotels private car park after we had vacated our room (at no charge) so that we could explore the City.

Too noisy to sleep, even in a back room as I had to have the window open because the radiator was red-hot and couldn't be adjusted. The bed was uncomfortable with cheap nasty mattress, bathroom had very badly laid lino that you almost surf on it was so wavy. There was a sign saying to ring reception if there was anything we needed. We rang to ask for shampoo but were told "we don't do shampoo". All the bathroom had was a tiny bar of soap. Shower was very feeble too.

WiFi didn't work despite being advertised as free.

The food is an eat all you can buffet. For lunch breakfast and dinner. It tastes like it was cooked days ago. I never trust food that has quantity rather than quality as its selling point. This is no exception.

Staff here are rare and indifferent. I waited ages at three different bars before finally getting any service. Then the barman told me there was no money on my room so wouldn't put drinks on account - reception had never asked for a card swipe when we checked in.

The Green Dragon looks like it was last refurbished in the 1980s. It looks and smells like an old people's home. There was an overwhelming smell of gravy when we arrived and the shake'n'vac smell in the ballroom was particularly nauseating! The space is good but it is badly neglected and desperately needs a refurb. There are still Forte signs all over the place!

Only saving grace is that is was so near to the Cathedral, where I was singing all weekend.

Clean hotel but very dated. Attention to detail is not what this hotel does. Breakfast served with signs saying Indian selection and the most inviting part of the breakfast was the plastic fruit! Central location but I won't go back.

We stayed at the Green Draon recently because we had arranged a function in the ballroom. Our room was ok, though nothing special. It was very spacious though (this wasn't the case with other members of our party). The bathroom was in desperate need of a makeover, but everything worked. The room was nice and warm during the day / early evening but freezing cold in the middle of the night (we stayed last weekend!). I ended up having to wear a jumper over my pyjamas as there was no duvet, just 2 thin sheets and a threadbare blanket.
The rest of the hotel was lovely, full of character, and the staff were great.the car park is very small, not surprising for a city centre location.
All in all I may return to this hotel. Depends how seriously they take the numerous comments about rooms needing updating!

We arrived on Monday for a 2 night stay at about 1300, our room was ready, it was spacious with an on suite bathroom, a large double bed plenty of cupboard space. the room was clean and was cleaned each day. We also had the usual tea and coffee facilities and a large HD TV.
The evening Buffet (extra) was ok with Indian, Chinese and British food, not a large selection but was ok, the breakfast buffet was also good, but the same each day. There is also a large hotel carpark at the rear of the hotel.
We didn't bother with the hotel bar, only one ale on tap, but around the corner there is a great pub The Lichfield Vaults with 5 real ales on tap, or from the town centre down Commercial St.
and across the junction there is a Wetherspoons. I can recommend a trip to Leominster, plenty of small shops, second hand and antiques.

Room Tip: Front was ok.

What was once THE premier place to stay in Hereford has certainly seen better days.
We stayed one night as had a birthday party. It was an offer of £55 per room per night and breakfast a bargain £5.
I wouldnt pay the full price of about £70 per room but this hotel offer was cheaper than any of the other hotels-including the travel lodge and premier inn and our party venue was round the corner so need to pay taxi fares.

The hotel and rooms are dated and tired but clean. Our room had views of other buildings. The carpet was threadbare-bed had seen better says and had a blanket and horrible old nylon flowery throw. The bathroom tiles were chipped and shower curtain had gone orange at the bottom. There was no toileteries just 2 small bars of soap so make sure you pack some.

Two old chairs made it look like an old peoples home.

Dont expect luxury and you wont be dissapointed.

Having said all that I would stay again. You cant get a better central location. Breakfast was nice despite having to ask for and then wait for our toast.

Down in the foyer the display cabinet that one day must have housed expensive gems were filled with tat.

It was nice to relax in the lounge areas the next day with its cosy real fire and numerous comfy chairs.

Sunday lunch is about £9 for 3 courses and a cream tea about £5.

This is the second time we have stayed in the Green Dragon and although the receptionist recognised us, the hotel is still in great need of a major lift. The breakfast and drinks aren't pleasant and evening drinks are expensive. We have a grandson who lives in Hereford so visits will always take place, next time we will be staying at the Travelodge, though this is basic at least it is clean and modern.
