“Get what you pay for”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2012

Stayed here for 2 nights this weekend on a Groupon deal. All I can say, having read previous reviews before going, yes; the Green Dragon is an icon of years gone past and could really do with a makeover. However, if you are looking for a discounted stay it is more than adequate and the wife and I had no concerns and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. If you want 4/5 star hotel then you got to pay the rate and if you are dissatisfied then you have real cause for complaint.... after all on a voucher deal all you really want is a bed for the night and a hearty breakfast and we had both!! The only issue really was a pompous guest causing a scene over the length of time he had waited for something which could have been addressed properly but he was one of those that wanted the 4/5 star experience at the 2/3 star price!! Get a life and treat the hard working staff with some respect!!

Stayed here 2 years ago room was excellent booked this time with a groupon deal voucher and was put in the third floor room which was awful. Did complain and was shown other rooms. A lovely hotel but needs updating furniture, decorating. Staff very friendly. Food in restraint is lovely. Advise people to try the steak!

Oh, boy. I wanted so hard to like this place and its olde worlde charm but the fact is it is woefully past its prime and management is either oblivious to the fact or not bothered.

First sign of a problem was on walking into the lobby only to be greeted by a 5 gallon bucket catching water that was leaking through the ceiling. Closer examination of the ceiling (skylight, to be precise) showed extensive rotting of the woodwork. This was clearly a problem that had been going on for months, if not years, and management can't be bothered to address it; I'm guessing because the whole operation is probably losing money hand over fist. Just my guess.

The public areas are the most attractive part of the hotel, which is damning with faint praise. The Garrick lounge has a certain charm of gentility of days gone by. The bar area is lit with all the charm of a British Rail waiting room. Actually that is probably unfair to British Rail waiting rooms. A KGB interrogation room or Abu Ghraib might be more accurate. Imaginative lighting design is not expensive and can transform a place. Why this place is lit with bare light-bulbs is bewildering. Properly lit and staffed it could be a welcome refuge from the lager-swilling environment of the town's pubs. But as it is nobody was even drinking there, just one or two people who came to buy drinks and presumably take them to their rooms.

Ah, yes. The rooms. I eventually found mine after navigating the rabbit warren of hallways and fire doors and confusing signs. So, what of the room? Well, it cost GBP75/USD120. While our personal tastes and preferences will vary, I think it likely we can all agree that every guest has the right to expect certain fundamentals, like a reasonably comfortable bed and hot water when you turn the hot-water tap on. For that reason a stay here is tantamount to a violation of your basic rights. You can feel the coils springs in the mattress just by resting your hand on the mattress. As for hot water, my suggestion would be to turn on the hot tap as soon as you enter the room. By the time you have unpacked, checked your email and watched telly for twenty minutes, the water may well be up to body temperature. But the flow from the shower is more accurately calculated in cupfuls per minute than litres or gallons per minutes. There are Motel 6's in the US who do the fundamentals better for $25 /night than the Green Dragon does at almost five times the price.

Not wanting this to be a totally negative review, let me close with some guidance to management. I usually charge for consulting gigs to clients, but since it's Christmas here's a freebie...

The place is too big and its fixed costs are clearly killing you. Get rid of half the property, reduce your expenses and bring in some cash.

Next, improve the public areas with some imaginative lighting, especially the bar. It could be a good revenue centre but is utterly dire as it stands. For well under a thousand pounds you could absolutely transform the place.

At the same time, outsource the restaurant. It has all the charm of a bad school cafeteria except the food in bad school cafeterias is typically much better. Outsource the space and the management of the restaurant, reduce your own overhead and bring in cash from the lease.

With the improved cash flow resulting from the above, fix up the public areas (might want to start with that leaky skylight). That will attract more traffic to the bar and restaurant.

Finally, invest further new-found cash in a wholesale upgrade of the rooms, of which you will now have fewer. Once you have done that you will no longer have to discount your rooms down as much as people tell me you are willing to. You will have an operation that can compete with places like the Castle House, that sells out at GBP125/nite, has high occupancy rates and is handily profitable.

Merry Christmas.

Stayed for two nights at the Green Dragon Hotel and had a thoroughly enjoyable stay. the hotel staff are all very pleasant and helpful. The John Spice restaurant is excellent value with a varied cuisine with the choice of Indian , Chinese , Italian and traditional English dining all help yourself buffet style so you can eat as much or as little as you want for a set fee of £11.95 per head (or £9.95 per head if you dine early and pay your bill by 7pm).The location of the hotel is excellent being in the city centre. the rooms are cleaned daily and are spotless as is the rest of the hotel, the hotel may seem a little dated but all adds to the character of the location in the city.Would definately stay here again even paying the full tariff.

(One night stay, without car).
As other have mentioned, this is quite an old building and I too found that some items were looking worn - the carpets in particular were very threadbare (especially on the stairs and in my room near the bed). However (and more importantly), everything was clean, tidy and comfortable and I found the staff very attentive and pleasant. TV in the room was quite small, but ok for my short stay.

The food here was particularly good - loved the "help yourself" evening buffet and the choices available (Indian, Italian, along with traditional English food for those who prefer something more traditional). When I went up for more, my table was totally relaid by the time I quickly returned.
Breakfast was again very nice, and in the same self-service style, also allowed to sit anywhere I chose, which was welcome.

There seemed to be a problem with the Wi-Fi during my stay - it never actually worked - the receptionist acknowledging there was a problem with the login pages looping round and never letting you in, but hard to complain as it's free anyway.

All in all, quite a nice stay and would use again.

We stayed at the Green Dragon on a "deal" and chose to extend by a night so can confirm that (a) we thought it worth staying, and (b) room prices are open to a degree of negotiation. We found the hotel comfortable, we had a large room with 6 foot bed, 2 armchairs plus all of the other things one expects. The room was cleaner than many we have stayed in but why is it that rooms are seldom cleaned around the edges or above eye level?.
The staff were all very helpful and cheerful. The restaurant is excellent value if not the height of cuisine. Yes this is a hotel that has left its glory days behind it, but its location right in the heart of the city, the fact that it is a cheerful, comfortable place offering good value food means that we will, almost certainly visit again.
A word of warning on the "early bird" meal offers, the bill has to be printed before the end of "early bird" time i.e. 7 p.m. We lingered, waiting for the waiter who had looked after us to re-appear instead of settling with his colleague - we lost the "early bird" advantage!

Room Tip: Ends of corridors are always quieter

Yes this is an old building, but clean warm and comfortable. Breakfast and buffet dinner were fine. Soup was only tepid but staff quickly produced hot soup. Reception and restaurant staff eager to give a good impression and help where needed.
