Fascinating exhibits - the chained library literally smells of history... our visit made all the more interesting by the two chaps who explained some of the key points and answered our questions.

I had seen the Mappa Mundi before but was happy to pay the entrance fee for a second visit. The map is displayed in a building adjacent to the cathedral. There is a short video which is worth seeing. The map was very interesting and showed the world in a different perspective than maps produced today. This reminded me that there is always another way of viewing things and One's own view is not the only or right one!

The chained library had a medieval energy and I could sense scholars pouring over the books. I felt very lucky to have been able to visit this historic exhibition so easily.
Combined with a visit to the cathedral and a cup of tea afterwards this would make a good afternoon out. Hereford has a lot to offer for a longer visit.

the mappa mundi gives you an insight into the thinking of our ancestors and their ideas of the world in which they live.

Medieval cloisters of Hereford Cathedral open into the purpose built Mappa Mundi exhibit seemlessly. The map is facinating to study, the more you look, the more you see. Very interesting to see how medival people saw the world and their sophistication. Well worth a visit.

The map is a revelation of medieval thought and tradition. Our volunteer guide would willingly have given a most erudite commentary on the map in Welsh, but my lack of understanding of the language in sufficient depth meant we had to confine ourselves to English, but this was highly illuminating. The map amazingly escaped being damaged in the Reformation asd a result of Hereford Cathedral not being a monastry. Sadly, the books in the chained library are not being made available in digital form, but the library is a great example of how manuscript books used to be accessed, even when literacy was the preserve of a very small minority.

The first visit was amazing, The medieval map, where fantastic creatures tell us about the good and bad forces in the world, North is pointed to the left and Hereford is in the centre of the world, is made of the skin.
Chained library contains some very early translations of the bible into English, with the local flavour, where the word "alcohol" is replaced by the word "cider".

It is really worth to indulge in this old, dark and distinctive world of historical truth and medieval beliefs.

To anyone travelling either to or near to Hereford make the Cathedral a must place to visit. It is worth your time!
