Arrived at the Deli Lounge on a Saturday night at around 8.45pm. We hadn’t booked but knew we would probably get a table as Hereford didn’t seem that busy. As we walked in we noticed half a dozen tables that were free but were still told to sit and wait. We waited roughly 10-15 minutes before a solemn and rather conceited member of staff showed us to a table in the ‘dining area’ which one could only describe as a tired, depleted environment suffering greatly from a complete lack of ambience. There were no windows, no candles, no pleasant lighting and no background music (The photos of the restaurant on trip advisor were taken in 2009 and are totally unrepresentative of how the restaurant looks now). We soon realised that we would have been far better off ordering a takeaway and eating back at home. Not a good start.

We had ordered poppadoms with chutneys and some drinks, both of which arrived at the same time nearly 25 minutes after we had been seated. We made sure we ordered our mains as soon as we had these as we didn’t want to wait any longer than half an hour as we had plans to meet friends in town. I noticed that when we placed our main order, the waiter wasn’t paying any real attention and made absolute zilch eye contact which seemed so rude. The poppadoms and dips were fine but we were sat with dirty plates for a long while before a different waiter cleared them away. We asked how long the mains would take and to our surprise we received a shrug and an irritated response of “shouldn’t be too long”.

What really wound us up was how the waiters swaggered around the room like members of the Gestapo. Not once were we informed of the progress of our mains, or even given a small apology for the wait. We had ordered our mains at roughly 9.20pm, and there was still no sign at 10.40pm. We were about to get up and walk out but could see the waiters trollying it out of the kitchen. Now, a big part of the evening would have been forgotten if the food was right – but it really wasn’t. We’ve ate at a lot of curry houses before at I’m honestly telling you that the food was really quite shocking. My jelfrezi was probably as hot as a phaal, I couldn’t eat it. My girlfriend’s main was fine, but the rice dishes were minuscule and the naanbread was oily and undercooked. I had politely asked for some water for obvious reasons. Yet again, we were acknowledged with terrible attitude from a member of staff who couldn't care less. 15 minutes later, we received the water and were ready to pay and leave - it was now around 11:10pm. I spoke to the manager and explained why we weren’t happy and he knocked 20-25% off the bill, which was better than nothing. After high hopes, it’s pretty safe to say that we won’t be dining at the deli lounge again unless there are some serious changes made.

There are many Indian restaurants in Hereford. A number of them are very good but the Deli Lounge really is the best. The food is excellent, service first rate and the restaurant itself is spacious and pleasant.

Why go anywhere else?

The menu is printed on a dark red background and if you're like us (we need reading glasses) then it was difficult to read. No problem - the waiter turned up the lights and then brought a mag ifying glass! Very impressed!

Having finally decided on our food it was absolutely delicious! The service was very good - although we did have to ask twice for a drink - hence the very good rather than excellent. Would definitely recomend to others.
