I've been working in Winchester since last June and up until January this year, had tried several hotels in the city centre... the majority being a little tired and dull or ridiculously expensive. The Winchester Hotel was my last attempt at finding decent accommodation before deciding to rent... I'm still here five months later.
Location: Couldn't be more convenient. A five minute walk from the train station and an eight minute stroll to the middle of the High Street. A little bit of noise from the road in front - only noticeable if you are sat on the terrace - otherwise nice and quiet.
Rooms and Facilities: I've stayed in several throughout the building. The room I tend to stay in has double doors leading out onto a fire escape. There are two of these that I am aware of. Some of the rooms are quite a walk away from reception and rooms 119/120 are up some steps, so if you have a disability/infirmity, please make sure you let reception (and NOT central booking) know in advance and they'll do all the can to accommodate you. The rooms are generally very nicely decorated - some more modern than others. Great sized bathrooms. Nice fluffy towels and dressing gowns if in exec room. Fridge with bottled water, tea/coffee making facilities. Powerful hairdryer (ladies!). They've recently changed the toiletries to a better supplier, but note - this is a hard water area, so bring plenty of hair conditioner.
The gym is well equipped and used by members of the public but is rarely busy. There's a small pool (don't expect to be able to do laps in it - but there is a resistance machine so you can still get exercise).
Food: Myself and my partner have eaten in Hutton's (the hotel restaurant) and the plates were beautifully presented. Service is outstanding. As I often come in late from work, I usually have something from the bar menu. The hot sandwiches are great. Breakfast menu is extensive buffet style with hot and cold options (lots of locally sourced food if you care about your carbon footprint). If the weather is nice, they'll set a table out on the terrace at the front if you ask. The bar is well stocked. The only downside is that you can't get draught Guinness - but that's just me being fussy.
Staff: Well, you'd think I'd be a bit biased, having stayed here for a while, but it doesn't matter how good a hotel is - as a lone female traveller, if I don't have the right feeling about the staff, I don't stay. Friendly, approachable, helpful and attentive. I've felt like I've been part of a large family - everyone from the heads of Housekeeping, to the reception and bar staff to the Maintenance man always make a point of smiling and saying hello.
I recently brought 20 of by staff to stay here for a Client event. I did a post-event survey. They loved the place, but the most praise was reserved for the staff. The management take everyone's concern seriously and hold regular meetings with a random selection of customers to elicit feedback.
I'll be leaving this place in a couple of weeks - and I'll miss it - a lot. If you ever book in here... tell then Sue sent you.
