“I'm going to miss The Winchester Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 29, 2010

I've been working in Winchester since last June and up until January this year, had tried several hotels in the city centre... the majority being a little tired and dull or ridiculously expensive. The Winchester Hotel was my last attempt at finding decent accommodation before deciding to rent... I'm still here five months later.

Location: Couldn't be more convenient. A five minute walk from the train station and an eight minute stroll to the middle of the High Street. A little bit of noise from the road in front - only noticeable if you are sat on the terrace - otherwise nice and quiet.

Rooms and Facilities: I've stayed in several throughout the building. The room I tend to stay in has double doors leading out onto a fire escape. There are two of these that I am aware of. Some of the rooms are quite a walk away from reception and rooms 119/120 are up some steps, so if you have a disability/infirmity, please make sure you let reception (and NOT central booking) know in advance and they'll do all the can to accommodate you. The rooms are generally very nicely decorated - some more modern than others. Great sized bathrooms. Nice fluffy towels and dressing gowns if in exec room. Fridge with bottled water, tea/coffee making facilities. Powerful hairdryer (ladies!). They've recently changed the toiletries to a better supplier, but note - this is a hard water area, so bring plenty of hair conditioner.

The gym is well equipped and used by members of the public but is rarely busy. There's a small pool (don't expect to be able to do laps in it - but there is a resistance machine so you can still get exercise).

Food: Myself and my partner have eaten in Hutton's (the hotel restaurant) and the plates were beautifully presented. Service is outstanding. As I often come in late from work, I usually have something from the bar menu. The hot sandwiches are great. Breakfast menu is extensive buffet style with hot and cold options (lots of locally sourced food if you care about your carbon footprint). If the weather is nice, they'll set a table out on the terrace at the front if you ask. The bar is well stocked. The only downside is that you can't get draught Guinness - but that's just me being fussy.

Staff: Well, you'd think I'd be a bit biased, having stayed here for a while, but it doesn't matter how good a hotel is - as a lone female traveller, if I don't have the right feeling about the staff, I don't stay. Friendly, approachable, helpful and attentive. I've felt like I've been part of a large family - everyone from the heads of Housekeeping, to the reception and bar staff to the Maintenance man always make a point of smiling and saying hello.
I recently brought 20 of by staff to stay here for a Client event. I did a post-event survey. They loved the place, but the most praise was reserved for the staff. The management take everyone's concern seriously and hold regular meetings with a random selection of customers to elicit feedback.

I'll be leaving this place in a couple of weeks - and I'll miss it - a lot. If you ever book in here... tell then Sue sent you.

Enjoy.

Outside impressions of this hotel was not the very best BUT inside it lovely. Super reception area and a very warm welcome by Poppy at reception. Check in was easy. Our room was imaculate. The only one very small irritant is that the TV was on the dressing table to the left hand side of the bed so evening whatching was not very comfy for the person on the wrong side of the bed ! Breakfast was fab, very attentive staff, super selection of food well presented and plentiful. Well worth a visit.

The hotel has a public car and coach park directly in front and parking for the hotel is to the left hand side and rear - by which time entry is quicker through the side Leisure club door. Limited parking available - also used by leisure club members. Staff generally excellent and food very good but not cheap. Dining room for breakfast has glass along wall making it seem hot. Internal corridors rather narrow and winding due to shape of site and hotel. But room was good when we got there. Some strange noises from air conditioning (gurgling water) or perhaps that was the plumbing from upstairs. Not a major annoyance though. 15 min walk to town centre but only 400 m from train station.

Leisure centre - jet stream pool - controls difficult to use and not signed well - being changed, sauna small. Pleasant and relaxing though.

Free wireless internet in lounge/bar area - so many people doing that, some eating. Large group arrived and met in bar for drinks pre dinner - swamped bar and lounge area for short time - not good for casual diners and internet users. Shame no free internet in room.

Stayed overnight on business. Free hotel car parking for guests. Check in was simple and "fuss-free". Evening meal was delicious. Staff very friendly and helpful. Room was clean and tidy. Conducted business presentation next day in one of the meeting rooms. All appliances functional and effective. Easy "extended" check out. An excellent example of how a business should be run.

We stayed here for four nights and used the hotel as a base to explore the area. The staff were lovely, very friendly and helpful. The hotel is ideally located to explore the town of winchester, only a few minutes away. The hotel is very clean and confortable, nice bar, very nice restaurant with great food. Room was spacious with modern decor, bathroom was also very nice. Highly recommended, would happily return again. Thank you.

An attractive modern hotel in good location, minutes from town centre. Staff were pleasant, helpful and friendly (not always the case in some hotels). The room was comfortable and clean with good service.
We had drinks in the bar prior to our evening meal, on the two nights we were booked in.
Again, pleasant roomy sitting area, with the same efficient and friendly service from the bar staff.
This was again echoed by staff in the dining room, where the standard of food was high and reasonably priced.
We enjoyed our stay at the Winchester, and would hightly recommend it to friends.

Just returned from a weekend break at The Winchester Hotel - an absolutely first-class hotel within about 10 minutes easy walk of the city centre shops and attractions. The room was spotlessly clean and included everything you'd need for a comfortable stay. The staff team were all extremely polite and friendly - very comfortable and modern restaurant, the food quality was brilliant as was the service. The leisure facilities were extremely clean and well appointed - pools/spa/steam room/ sauna/showers and more than adequate gym equipment. One point worthy of note is that maybe the hotel car park can soon get filled up - however the hotel is fronted by a large public car park, but charges do apply there every day excluding Sundays. That said, we didn't arrive until lunchtime and we had no problem finding a space within the hotel park which is free to guests. I can honestly say that it would be very difficult to find any criticism of this hotel and we look forward to re-visiting in the future. Congratulations to all the management and staff !
