“Bit chilly must be the ghosts!”
Reviewed December 31, 2012

We ate here during a shopping trip in December 2012. The staff were excellent and friendly and the food was great. A good range of sandwiches and the chips and onion rings were excellent. My only problem was it was a bit chilly. We sat in the middle of the pub bit it was still cold. Crank up the heating and light a roaring fire and that would have rated this 5 stars.

“Great stop off”
Reviewed December 20, 2012 via mobile

We had an office Christmas lunch here. 15 sat in a lovely cosy downstairs area. It was a tight squeeze for a couple but most had good area. The waitresses were wonderful and nothing was too much trouble. The starters varied, duck liver pâté was superb. The main course of turkey etc was a very filling meal and given the numbers catered for of very good standard. Nice roasties. The Christmas pudding and sauce was a very large end to a lovely meal and all at a really good price. Overall the pub is old, has a lot of history and is recommended for a stop when in Winchester. Lots of different areas to sit and take in the atmosphere. Great.

“Nice Food and Staff Friendly”
Reviewed December 19, 2012

Went to the Winchester Christmas market and stopped at this nice little pub for lunch. It is the oldest pub in Winchester and has a lovely atmosphere. The staff are friendly and the food is good. We had fish and chips (served on what looked like a breadboard?? ...mmmmmm no sure about this one!). Still the fish was excellent and there was plenty of it.

“Good value”
Reviewed December 7, 2012

Very crowded and by Sunday lunchtime they had run out of all the 'specials'. However there was a good atmosphere and the food was good value

“A Regular Knows”
Reviewed November 19, 2012

'I don't know why my mates and I always seem to finish up here, the drinks are dearer than elsewhere and the foods not special.' Although other reviewers have been very complimentary about the food my own opinion is closer to the local guy I spoke to propping up the bar. So why would you go back to The Royal Oak? If you are looking for a cheap drink a supermarket is near by and if you are looking for great food there are specialist restaurants around the corner. What they don't have is a guy and his mates that prop up the bar and chat to strangers. The pub is slightly quirky and has that friendly feel that helps conversation. If it had a piano you get the feeling that someone would sit at it and play.
Could I recommend it, of course not. Do I think you should give the place a visit, absolutely.
