Owner description: One of Winchester's five superb Military Museums telling the story of 250 years of campaigning for peace by The Royal Green Jackets and their former regiments, the 43rd and 52nd (The Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry), the 60th (The King's Royal Rifle Corps) and the 95th Rifles (The Rifle Brigade). An outstanding collection of uniforms, weapons, silver, paintings and medals set over two floors. The exhibition on the first floor, entitled 'With the Rifles to Waterloo', opened in 2015 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. The centrepiece of the exhibition is the 25 square metre model of the battle with light and sound commentary. The museum is situated in Peninsula Square, formerly the barracks and the home of the Rifle Depot.

My dad was stationed here from 1947 so visiting this piece of history is so important for me personally. This is a great museum, has great content and important to winchester itself. Well worth a visit, especially the battle of Waterloo war table simulation.

Everything you would expect from a modern military museum, Battle colours, history and friendly guides. Situated in the old Green Jackets Barracks. Also has a section for the Gurkhas Regiment.

I realise this is a trite reason to go to a military museum, but I have to say that you could spend a whole day in here. It was so interesting. There are hundreds of versions of the famous ground-breaking uniforms and the story of the special units that were established to meet the needs of the American colonies. There are also hundreds of different arms, medals, letters, photos, paintings and an enormous scale model of the battle of waterloo. There are spots where you can hold an old rifle to see how heavy they were, and little corners where the children can try out pieces of uniform. I found the personal possessions recovered from battle fields especially moving. The exhibition goes right up to the present day, with clips of News reports from Afghanistan. Definitely worth a good half day if you are in the area.
