“Lovely hotel for a special occasion”

We stayed here for one night. our room was lovely although a couple of gripes - there was mould on the bathroom blind, an empty bath salt sachet under the bath and just a dribble of hand wash so we had to put water in to get anything out to wash our hands. We mentioned this when we went for dinner & were told someone would put some in our room but they didn't. A basic provision & not what you expect when you've paid their prices for a room.

Dinner was excellent & a lovely ambience. Also breakfast, the sausage was the best I've ever tasted!

£8.80 for two pints wins the award for the most expensive couple of pints in Winchester. I have always loved the look of this pub, and i suppose they can charge whatever they like, but the food has always been expensive for what it is (please explain how you justify the cost of your 'triple cooked chips!). It would seem that the landlord is also happy to charge what he likes for the beer these days. Pity. I will be walking up the road to the Queen Inn, where the staff are friendlier , the beer is cheaper and more real ales!

Stayed 2 nights in this lovely old pub 5 minutes from the Cathedral & therefore the market.
Had a pleasant lunch on one of the days but otherwise only had 2 breakfasts which were excellent. Our room was the Nelson which was OK but the bed a bit uncomfortable.
The staff were unfailingly polite, helpful & very good.

Room Tip: Our friends had a quiet room across the street "the Bakery"

We came here a year ago (by accident) and decided to come back again a year later for the Christmas Markets in Winchester.

We booked direct and booked the 4 poster room a good few weeks in advance. I had worried that we'd not actually get the room I asked for, but I needn't have worried, as we did.

The facilities in this hotel are great but I do have a few VERY minor gripes...The bathroom of our room was starting to look a little tired with mould on some grout in the shower and some sealant around the base looking a little 'bodged'. There were also 2 light bulbs blown (one in bedside lamp, the other in bathroom). There was a caffietiere coffee pack in the room...but no caffietiere. There was no soap in the bathroom apart from liquid handwash (but there was a shower cap!) Also, and it's been mentioned a million times before, this pub can get very noisy in the evening. If you are expecting a quiet early night at the weekend...you won't get it. That said, the matress is very good quality and after a few beers I slept fairly well!

All in all, a very nice stay and we will come back. Staff are excellent. Parking on site (though a bit congested, so staff hold keys allowing cars to be moved around).

Received a warm welcome in this lovely, quaint pub in the most amazing location. We only stayed for a drink so not able to comment on the food but enjoyed our visit all the same. Will just say though, the toilet cubicles are a tight squeeze - could be interesting if you've had a few!

This is a great little pub/hotel in the heart of Winchester. Has a great olde pub feel to it, friendly staff and the food is good. We had four rooms booked and these varied widely in size and style but all were clean and comfortable. Some rooms are located in an other building but this wasn't a problem as it is directly opposite the main pub door.

We visited here with friends because they'd heard it was frequented by David Bowie. I guess the thinking behind this was that if he ate there, it must be good, plus there was a chance that we might see the great man. Its a pleasant place not far from the Cathedral. It looks like a very pubby pub. It's darkly lit with candles on tables and a large bar with lots of clutter on the walls. I got the feeling that all this pubiness was a little contrived though. As if a consultant had been given a brief to make it look a bit spit and sawdust. Call me a cynic. The service was swift, polite and efficient. The food was expensive but it was good. Portions were slightly mean though. We started with a selection of bread and olives and were given four tiny rolls for four people. They were £1.00 each. The olives were average. We chose a variety of mains, from Fish and Chips, Burger and Duck. All good. It's expensive for what it is but I guess they charge the prices they charge because they can. Winchester is not a cheap place to eat, possibly because it's quite a monied area. All in all a good pub with good food and beer. Shame David wasn't there though!
