“Great stay as usual”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2013

A great stay as usual, the atmosphere here is fantastic, also dog friendly so my Labrador Monty loves it here, friendly staff, breakfast were fabulous, although a little more items or rather greater amounts to make the full English a 'full' English.

Fantastic real ales

We've been to the Wykeham Arms a few times in recent years for dinner and it has been consistently very good. Our most recent trip was probably the best . . The smoked cheese starter in particular was excellent. What stands out - the menu is not too complex but offers a good range of meat/fish and other options, all served up in that typical modern restaurant/gastropub fashion (not overdone - looks good!) and the quality of food is very good (and cooked well). The wine list doesn't go as far as satisfying those who want Petrus but is fairly extensive & covers a good range of (fairly well priced) old world and new world wines, including some English sparkling & non-champagne French sparkling numbers (eg: Cremant). And of course all this happens in and around a well set out oldy worldly bar with all the pictures & desks & seats that you'd expect from a venue just across the road from Winchester College itself. Prices are perhaps more London than local pub, but they're not overly top end (and if you live and/or work in London dare we say you might not notice!). Definitely worth booking most evenings just to make sure you're not disappointed - especially Fridays & weekends - as it is popular. Overall a very attractive "historic" venue to dine in Winchester - we'll be going back.

I am actually in two minds about the Wykeham Arms. We stayed for three nights just before Christmas in the Bakehouse suite which was a new experience and probably best not repeated in the winter months as the lower floor, especially the bathroom, was very cold. The narrowness of the mezzanine precludes a king bed, so a little cosy for two restless sleepers.

The pub is as popular as ever and very crowded. We ate Friday dinner and Sunday lunch in the restaurant area (book online in advance, as our requests with our room booking were ignored). Dinner was definitely the better meal, although the portions were in some cases very small. Lunch was uninspiring, not sure if the menu is typical or adapted for the season, but not what I ave come to expect of the WA.

The staff were always competent and friendly, but somehow I think this is the end of my annual pilgrimage.

Room Tip: Go for one of the king bedded rooms unless traveling on your own.

We have just come back from the Wykeham Arms after a two night stay which I must say we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Very 'old school' pub, quirky and very buzzy which we like with lovely log fires. Check-in was easy and we were shown our room which was on the top floor, clean, cosy and comfortable, we slept like logs both nights :) we ate in the restaurant the first night which was delicious and shared a cheeseboard. Saturday we wandered around the town and saw the sights and did some retail therapy. We had dinner out the second night but came back for a drink, the pub was very busy just how we like it. Brekky is also excellent along with all the staff (especially Tricia on reception). Sad to leave but booked to go again nxt December for Xmas market. My only niggle would be no wardrobe or chest of drawers for clothes, but for one or two nights it didn't matter. Also the price of drinks we found a little on the high side.

The Wykeham Arms is one of the many reasons it is worth visiting Winchester more than once. It combines everything that you would hope for (but thought had been lost forever) in a great city pub - warm hospitality, excellent beers served with a smile, open fires, friendly people who are obviously enjoying themselves and a location with in a minute of the Cathedral, the river and the College. You can spend a lot of time simply browsing the pictures and other memorabilia related to the college, the city and the pub which cover the walls (and ceilings). The food offers substantial and traditional dishes like fish and chips, steak and oyster pie, excellent pork pie and sausages with a menu which regular changes!! Just check the website to avoid disappointment as the kitchen does close in the afternoon. And after lunch if you have seen the Cathedral and other sites, cross the road to the P and G Wells Bookshop - yes a REAL bookshop with an exceptional range of eclectic titles and a whole upper floor devoted to children's books!!

We visited the historic city of Winchester mainly to do some shopping and view the winter market. The Wykeham Arms was chosen as its close to town and had parking. From the moment we arrived the staff were helpful and cheerful. We had a good day shopping, we had looked at other places to eat but decided to eat at the Wykeham Arms and even though they were very busy they managed to give us a nice table at short notice. The food was good, I had the f*ggot as a starter and the beef an oyster stew as main both modern takes on older dishes. There was an excellent wine list with good service.
The room was large, with a super bathroom and a lot better than I had anticipated. In the morning breakfast was also very good. It was a slightly more expensive than I had reckoned but that was mainly because we eat at the venue. If I could make a suggestion there could be a bar menu for evening which would bring the price down.
Overall though we had a excellent two days stay and will be visiting again.

I don't often write reviews, only if exceptionally bad (warning!) or exceptionally good (as a thank-you). Pleased to report recent stay at the Wykeham Arms in Winchester was definitely the latter. I went with my husband on a rare weekend away without our young boys and had a completely brilliant time. It is a largish posh-pub, and was very busy on the weekend we were there, yet there was no problem with quality or speed of service, which amazed us, the staff just take everything in their stride and do it all with a smile. In fact, I would have to say, the number one thing we liked was that the staff all cared about whether or not we were enjoying ourselves - that should be a given, but sadly is often lacking, no matter how much you're paying. Often these places have a 'weekend' staff of disinterested local teens, but not here, it was all very personable and professional. There were things wrong with the room (no shower and mouldy teabags), but it just goes how far caring, considered service goes that you will overlook these things. We particularly loved things like beers in the bar fridges, free-wifi, lots of open fires, and the fact that they have really tried to create a warm and welcoming environment. The food is absolutely sensational, and we thought good value for the quality. The building must be at least 4-500 years old, it surely takes a lot of upkeep to keep it looking good, and all the artwork and ornaments, we spent ages just looking at all of these. You have to appreciate the labour of love that has gone into setting a place like this up, and the management deserve congratulations for all the care and attention that has been put into maintaining the overall experience - we will definitely be back.

Room Tip: I think the rooms on the top floor must be quieter, as you don't have people walking around over...
