Just spent one evening at the Marwell Hotel, first impressions on entering hotel are wow, staff were very helpful and polite, lovely reception area. went down to our room and boom what a shock, very dated and used. Bathroom tiles broken, lime staining around bath plug, very old plastic bath taps which were not nice, although the room was pleasant the wall paper has seen better days, television control didnt work, bed side lights didnt work, when I moved one of the wires hanging out of the wall. Beds were clean and comfortable. Breakfast was lovely. its such a shame that this lovely hotel has such old and dated rooms and you have to pay extra for the superior rooms. The staff are all lovely and the food scrummy.

Having noticed the hotel on a previous visit to the zoo we decided to stay here the night before a return visit. We asked for a remote room and found ourselves far away from the busy foyer area, next to a clump of oak trees, which did make it feel as if we were in a forest retreat.
Because it was my birthday we decided to eat in the restaurant, which we greatly enjoyed. Very courteous staff were attentive but not over zealous ,and provided a wine recommendation which turned out to be a spot on bargain.
All courses were good but not massive- excellent though if you prefer quality to quantity. The Eton Mess, with homemade raspberry jelly was particularly good, and the hen we had as a main had clearly experienced the great outdoors! The room was very spacious and comfortable and the breakfast- inevitably a buffet due to the number of guests- well above average. The bacon was much better than the usual card-board streaky that buffets usually furnish and a couple of mini pastries came as standard with the toast.

Room Tip: Go for the rooms in the woods, which do give a real forest lodge feel- albeit circa 1976- but no wor...

The hotel was more than adequate for my needs. Lots of facilities, clean, roomy, helpful staff, what more do some people want. As regards value for money, I'd say it was quite expensive all round for what I got. Eg breakfast is £15 per person, Meals in the dining room are a bit fancy: Wood Pigeon,, Dorset Crab, Salt Marsh Lamb, etc. Probably very tasty, but a bit pricey eg Cod Fish was £18.50. The bar snacks were a bit better, but still included Oriental Crispy Duck and Goat's Cheese Pizza. I am looking for Sausage, Egg, and Chips! But there are some pubs down the road with down to earth food at down to earth prices. Considering the price, I did not expect to find the wash bowl badly cracked (room 121), nor the walls so thin you hear every noise from next door, nor would I expect kids running up and down the iron fire escape at the back which made a terrific noise in our room.

We choose this hotel for is situation, near winchester on our way to the coast and not for the zoo ! Perfect : the room are spacious, clean, bed very confortable. We feel very far away in the middle of no where, because all the walls are windows so you can see the woods around you ! We also ate at the bar , and it's was ok, only the waiter was a bit confused (he forgot my husband order and he put more drink in our bill)
The swimming pool is nice, but not very clean around, and also in the changingroom, take your sandal with you !

The hotel was ok for a stay with Children, the pool was great but the bar food was extremely good. However, the bed was very uncomfortable, the room was dated and breakfast limited. Don't me wrong, it's a nice hotel and the price is reasonable and I'd stay there again with Children but not for business.

The bed are very comfortable. Receptionist very helpful and nice. Bar staff very serious waited a lot (35 min) for our lunch and we were only 2 clients in the bar and we ask for a caesar salad and a baguette plus 2 drinks it came up to 30£.Dinner is serve in elegant way so don't expect to eat a lot is more on the visual side, but very nice. The maitre very serious as well. Overall is a nice place but a bit expensive it might be because is august, i am not sure. Oh yes the breakfast is fantastic.

I've stayed at this hotel before for 5 nights and have to say the family room was in tip top condition however this time we were left disappointed, room 106 had a window hanging on one hinge! a dirty bathroom sink, no room service menu and the bunk beds had loose wood slats holding them together. That said the double bed was incredibly comfortable. The bar staff provided excellent service and food was good, we ate dinner in the bar and enjoyed a varied breakfast menu.. I think we were unfortunate with our room. We will however go back as it is a perfect venue to go to the Safari park.
