Description: The Green Man is so much more than a pub. It is a little enclave of hospitality; a stylish hang-out, and a great meeting place for friends, family or an intimate tete-a-tete. At The Green Man we specialise in locally sourced produce, resulting in an array of interesting and scrumptious dishes.  All of that, coupled with lovely, bubbly staff and wonderfully welcoming service, makes The Green Man a rather special place to be. Come and join us in our eclectic retro furnished bar. Enjoy a great choice of beers, an impressive and very well researched wine list (hic!), and our specialty cocktails, not forgetting of course our rather unique boutique spirits list. We're just a stone's throw away (4 minutes to be precise) from the historic Winchester Cathedral, surrounded by culture, and noted as a hidden gem in the old capital of England. Not only do we have a very cool and relaxing bar area, but we also have an exquisite Edwardian style dining room, which is the perfect place for a Sunday roast or destination dinner. And if you are looking for that special venue for your forthcoming event then our Outhouse is a quirky mixture of rustic and industrial style; ideal for birthday's, afternoon tea's and specialty vintage weddings.

“Expensive water on sale here.”
Reviewed March 18, 2014 via mobile

I dropped in here on Tuesday afternoon and as I had a dental appointment, stuck to a pint of lime and soda. The amount of lime used barely changed the clarity of the soda water, but it was the price that shocked me.

£2.65 for what was basically a pint of water.

I was a publican for over 20 years and NEVER charged for soda water. What we are talking about here is tap water, with carbonated gas to make the bubbles and a dash... no a drop of lime juice. OK, I understand about profits, overheads and facilities, but £2.65 is just excessive. Either they are making about £120 per bottle of lime or a fortune out of water!!!

I won't be going back any day soon.

“Nice place, nice food, let down badly by shortcomings”
Reviewed February 23, 2014 via mobile

Liked the decor and ambience, although very quiet on this Sunday for lunch. Nice craft lager. Very simple limited menu, only one choice of roast that was beef. Starters of Beetroot and goats cheese and a pigeon breast perfectly nice, although took a little while to arrive for essentially salads. However, the delays were only to get worse. Our 2 roast beefs arrived an hour later!! Seriously guys, this isn't a la carte, it's just a matter of plating up a roast! When it finally arrives (perfectly nice) they tell us there is no horseradish sauce! OMG, you only have one roast option and it's beef and you don't have its principle condiment. Needless to say others were asking for it too.

Who is managing this place? Presumably no one with any common sense. I could have walked down to sainsburys myself and bought some, so why didn't the staff (most of whom we're standing around chatting as it was so quiet) pop down to the shop and buy some if it ran out?! Alternatively of course they could have anticipated the need for this before the day started. It's just lazy and stupid and totally spoiled our experience.

They did take our drinks off the bill as an apology but to be honest this just made me more frustrated to observe such business stupidity.

Come on guys, you're ruining something with potential here. People will vote with their feet.

“What a find. Very innovative menu. Great service.”
Reviewed February 16, 2014

Went early before cinema. We were the first there but the table felt intimate and service very friendly. Soon filled up. And what a menu. The chef is a thinker. Really creative without fuss. Will definitely go back. Try it out before too many people find out about it!

“Pleasant Pub Dining Experience”
Reviewed January 3, 2014

Had a 2 course lunch before nipping across the road to see the new Mandela film. Simple menu choice, but excellent food and good portions. Deep bowl of Breaded Whitebait, and huge Chicken Livers on doorstop sized toast, followed by Fresh Panfried Plaice and Cumberland Sausages, washed down with a bottle of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc. For a total of 25 quid a head, well worth it. Nice ambience, not over the top upmarket, still a pub, cozy, nice mix of locals and diners.
