“Truly awful - do not stay here no matter what!”
Reviewed March 3, 2013 via mobile

Terrible in every way. Decor horrendous, the whole place smelt of damp and wet dog, rooms dirty and beds uncomfortable. The worst part - that they don't warn you about - is that they have NO CENTRAL HEATING. It was absolutely freezing and when we arrived the small fan heater they had put in our room didn't work. They did replace this but it did feel like lower than the basic standards of living expected. We booked this place because we were on a budget but it's not worth the £50 they charge - we felt like we were squatting in a factory in our room! Needs shutting down!

Please – Please read this and take note – none of these reviews are exaggerations . . sadly . . its all true! Budget hotels for the same ££ are available and much much nicer.

I pride myself on honest, fair and reasonable reviews – this one will be no different . .

4 friends and I stayed at this absolute hole of a shanty masquerading as a B&B for one night when visiting Winch for a friend’s birthday.

Hotel Location: It’s a good location, 5 mins walk from all the shops, bars restaurants great.

Rooms / Facilities etc: Before we get in to specifics, there is one main general comment to make. THERE IS NO HEATING OR HOT WATER IN THIS HELL HOLE AT ALL. The provision of electric heaters is not sufficient when it is snowing outside. We literally had to go buy thermal vests and joggers to sleep in.

The room was dire. Broken beds, dirty (blood stained) sheets, dirty rooms, ripped wallpaper, awful smells, curtains hanging off . awful.

There was a kettle, we daren’t drink from it.

The shared toilet was filthy. We didn’t use the shared shower as it was too cold to get undressed and then wet.

Food & Drinks: We didn’t eat or drink here for fear we would catch an illness and die in our cold, broken beds.

Staff: Useless. They put us in a room. We went ot for lunch, they called and advised they had put us in the wrong room and told me to return immediately with the room key. I stupidly asked for an iron, 30 minutes later I went to see where she was, and she had forgotten she was looking for one.

General: Please please please do not think these reviews are an exaggeration – it’s a literal hell on earth.

Stay at the Mecure – its only £25 more.

We will definitely be back – when hell freezes over . . even then . . id have to be dragged there!

Room Tip: Don't stay here!

After staying here last year was not happy but WOW what an improvement, stayed in one of the "new" rooms which was very nice and the ambience of an evening in the restraunt was great for my wife and I. The new full breakfast was definately a belly burster thoroughly enjoyable

An absolute pleasure and we will be back

First arrival the atmosphere was very unwelcoming. One of the other guest was all over me and very rude and the staff didn't do anything to stop him. The bedroom was dirty and the bed springs were very prominent making our night very uncomfortable. The television wasn't working and when we turned it round to find what the problem was, we found it was hollow. The toilet lock wasn't fixed properly, the paper towel was empty. When we came down for breakfast, we could not find the milk, my husband asked one of the customer where we could find the milk after we had looked in the fridge - it was nothing there. The staff then came having just woken up. We could tell you more, but we cut our stay short, lets leave it at that!!
We would not recommend this establishment to ANYONE!!

Room Tip: Need to give the entire place and staff a face-lift

Just returned from two days. Stayed for my Husband's birthday which was totally spoilt because of the bad experience of this place. Stayed out all day walking the streets rather than going back. Freezing cold, dirty, no facilities such as soap, had to ask for toilet paper. We went to bed with more clothes on than when we went out.Toilet lock kept jamming. Nowhere to hang clothes. Had a junk cupboard in our room which had an old duvet with blood on it! Net curtains stinking of dirt and dust. Window frames filty. We came away feeling dirty and itchy! The mattresses had coiled springs digging in your back all night. As for the cold breakfast! Don't even go there! We looked in a fridge and there was something growing in it! Black mould all over the door, obviously not been cleaned for months. We have since discovered that the Hotel Inspectors were there last year - they obviously haven't made any difference. Everyone in Winchester seems to know about it. We didn't expect the Ritz but you do expect the basic comforts for £50 a night. Didn't even venture into the Pub. STAY CLEAR!!!

Room Tip: No room will be any good

We arrived on Friday night after a long drive, to find out that our booking had not been correctly dealt with because the manager had been away. The guy who took our booking had not been fully trained and neglected to ask for a confirmation e mail and subsequently there was no space for us in the hotel. The chap behind the bar apologised, got another hotel number from his manager, who was not available to speak to, before going to play pool. There was no answer. That was it and we left. None of us knew the area at all, and we ended up staying with a relative 30 miles away.
We later found out that there was little chance to find alternative accommodation as there was a graduation, or similar, going on in the town that weekend.
I have worked in the hospitality trade for 20 years and this is likely the worst service and ineptitude due to inadequate training that I have encountered.
Not advised.

Room Tip: Go elsewhere

£35 for a BnB which is a five minute walk to Winchester city centre is cheap and frankly you get what you pay for. If you looking for the lap of luxury keep looking, but if cheap and cheerful and moderately clean is good enough, then FILO should do the trick.
I stayed on Wednesday 24th October 2012 as I had a night out in Winchester, unfortunately the shared shower room was down to a trickle and removing the suds from my body proved to be a bit of a challege with the available water. I had the attic room which involved negotiating a practically vertical spiralish staircase, this should not be undertaken by anyone with any type of mobility issues or weight issues. The bedroom was basic if I'm being kind, it had two wire sprung single beds which took up 90% of the floor area and fortunately I had drunk enough Guinness to not fully appreciate how uncomfortable they really were.
Breakfast was basic, help yourself to a stunning array of childs cereals - coco pops won it for me, then help yourself to tea/coffee and toast. Once again not the grandest of breakfasts but you get what you pay for.
If you like spiders this place is definately for you.

Room Tip: There are two communal shower rooms, before entering check which one has the best trickle of water...
