Description: The Cowherds in Southampton is a country pub & restaurant oozing rural charm and rustic character. Our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar. Well behaved dogs are welcome in the tiled section of our pub. Choose from casual and formal dining Monday to Friday, same menu.

“Pub on the common”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 7, 2013 via mobile

Part of the vintage chain, normally excellent food and atmosphere but this pub seemed a bit below par, food was well cooked but it all seemed as though it had been left under the grill for a bit to long, fish platter was ok but all over cooked a tad. Basically food was not to bad certainly not enough to complain about but wouldn't rush back. If your in the area go to the vintage in at golden common much better value for money.

“two visits in a week - one lunch, one dinner. Both excellent”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 3, 2013

Had gammon for the lunch, and rump steak for dinner.
Staff were attentive, accommodating and flexible. worth the 30 minute walk from my hotel.

“A beacon of warmth and welcome”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 3, 2013

We fled to the Cowherds after a terrible experience at The Royal Thai Pier. Our group of four was cold, hungry and fed up. We were given a really warm welcome, shown to a table in a lovely warm spot and proceeded to have excellent pub grub, drinks and service. Fantastic and thank you.

“Above average, uncomplicated and pretty traditional pub food in an excellent setting”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2013

For a reliably decent & reasonably priced meal in an attractive pub with an OK range of well-kept beers this place is hard to beat. Just off The Avenue in the centre of the City you can't miss it, sitting as it is in glorious isolation on The Common. It gets busy at lunchtimes and I expect in the evenings too, so it's probably wise to book. That said, I've been several times and never booked and rarely had to wait more than a few minutes for a table. The food won't win awards but I've always felt well-fed and more than satisfied with the quality of almost every dish. It does get overly familiar and predictable when it comes to desserts, but then it's that sort of place.

“Great for families”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

A good menu, easy parking and food was good except for the veg which were cold when served, although that did not detract from the main part of the meal. Not overpriced but tasty. Would recommend if you are in the area. Play park nearby and outside seating where you can see the playpark, although it is some 100 yds away.
