A real cafe bar with real friendly and welcoming owners who are dedicated to make the experience a great one!

Products are beautiful, best coffee in So'ton by a long shot.

Try it - you won't be disappointed ;)

“Very disapointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2014

Having read the rave reviews for no.4 my partner and I decided to heve lunch at Canute road. The door step sandwich that I ordered was stale and the bread chosen my third choice! How can a sandwich shop run ou of bread? The carrot soup which we both ordered lacked spice and seasoning and was at best bland!
MY partners tea was not hot enough to pour a second cup and when she tried to order a piece of cake on display she was told that cake is not for sale as it has been bought and paid for already, if so why was it on display as for sale?
The staff were robotic, and noticeable for their lack of personality, interest, and attention to detail
At one point there seemed to be no staff present at all! To sum up lousy service, stale food, cold tea. Do your self and friends a favour and give this highly overrated establishment a miss!

Following the earlier management response we posted, which is very polite and shown below, we have now had time to study our CCTV and Rick T's experience does not seem to be quite as bad as he makes out. In fact he and his partner polish off 2 bowls of the soup, 2 demi baguettes, a cheese and chorizo panini with red pesto, a large piece of cake washed down with a couple of rounds of drinks. At no point did they indicate they were unhappy in fact they are seen on CCTV engaging with the staff and having a fun time. Interestingly the sandwich which Rick T describes as stale he does even touch as he is so full he asks for it to be bagged up for take away! They actually spend 1hr and 50 min in the shop.
The other interesting fact is the CCTV also shows Rick T stealing our expensive salt and pepper grinder! He wraps it in a napkin and slips it in his bag before leaving, nice couple. If anyone would like descriptions of these two characters please pop in to the shop.

Dear Rick T,
Many thanks for your comments. At No.4 we value all feedback both positive and negative. As you are probably aware we are a small family business which prides ourselves on exceptional service and great tasting food and drinks, as the majority of reviews show. I am shocked that you have had such a bad experience. We are not one of the big brands and are simply a husband and wife team trying to provide a fun place to eat and drink at a good price.
I have spoken to the team working that day and they are also a bit shocked by your comments. They were a bit upset to be described as robotic, although one of our staff members has been practicing moonwalking a little. They all have personalities, indeed some a little too wild, and we have trained them to have an eye for detail.
Regarding the sandwich you had, we only use bread that is baked off in the morning and obviously this means as the day progresses the choice will diminish, however all the bread should be very fresh.
The tea we use is Tea Pigs and usually everyone loves this brand. It is always made with boiling water so I am a little confused why it should have been cool; I am assuming the first cup was piping hot.
Most of our cakes are homemade and kept in glass cloches but if someone in front of your partner has ordered the last piece and asked for it to be delivered after their sandwich we really can't sell it to another person.
Did you mention any of the problems you encountered at the time? The Manager would have immediately replaced any items for you or offered a full refund.
We don't ask to be on Tripadvisor and unfortunately although we are a Coffee and Wine Bar we get put in the restaurant category. The majority of our customers have a very positive experience but they understand that we are a Coffee and Wine Bar that offers a light bite experience and not a full blown restaurant.
I hope this reply offers some explanation and again I would like to take this opportunity to apologise. Please feel free to pop in and I would be happy to offer you a full refund.
Best regards

“An Oasis of calm”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2014

Have to admit it was Trip Advisor reviews that tempted me into trying this place out. We went for a lunchtime break before hitting the shops. Easy to find metered parking outside and more spaces up the road.

On entry it was obvious that a lot of love had gone into the development last year with a light and airy feel to the place. We had a couple of coffees and each had a very nice doorstop sandwich. The coffees were so nice (and great value at £2) that we had two more. So a filling and tasty lunch and two coffees each for £16.

A worthwhile stop and I am going to add this to my route for any Southampton shopping.

Called in last night for a charcuterie board and the melted camembert. All washed down with a fine Rioja. Superb food, lovely warm and comfortable surroundings with attentive polite and friendly staff. A little gem. Call in for coffee or lunch, you WON'T be disappointed.

“Light lunch near the old docks”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 7, 2013

We first came across Number 4 back in March when it had just opened and was in the throes of acquiring a liquor licence. The style and friendly welcome brought us back then the following day for a light lunch. So, after a lapse of several months we found ourselves back in Southampton, and we decided to see how they had fared by going at lunchtime on a Saturday. What a pleasant surprise! Quality of food has been maintained, the ambiance is excellent and the service good. The butternut squash soup was excellent, with a mound of fresh bread and butter. The chocolate and carrot cakes--good sized portions--very filling. All that plus pots of tea for 3 for £25.50.
The area is being redeveloped and parking can be a bit difficult to find. However, if you are visiting the Marina, Picturehouse or CineWorld nearby and fancy a light snack or a glass of wine and a read of the daily paper then try it........you'll be agreeably surprised at this little oasis....it deserves to do well.
