this little alternative cinema always shows a nice selection of mainstream and arty films. The bar and cafe are serving a great variety of drinks, some lovely cakes and cookies and now also warm dishes. here isn't the noisy, stressy environment with teenagers, kids and popcorn all over the floor.
The staff are lovely and it is like coming to some old friends.

“Good films. Poor venue.”
Reviewed May 23, 2014 via mobile

I went to see The Trip (movie version) with live Q & A session via satellite.

The film was ok and the Q & A a bit of a let down (badly hosted by Boyd Hilton), but the quality of the cinema made this a poor visit.

The whole of the screen (two) stank and was unbearably hot. During the film it got hotter to the point where when someone went in or out you could feel a brief bit of much needed fresh air. The seats were sticky and past their best. They would jolt back and forth with a mind of their own.

If it was cleaner and better maintained then I'd be there all the time as the selection of films is great, but it feels so dirty and dated.

When there's been a refurbishment I'll give it another go.

“Best kept secret in Southampton”
Reviewed May 15, 2014

Forget the large industrial sheds that pass for cinemas these days! Come to the little picturehouse on the quay at Ocean Village. As well as the usual blockbusters, they show foreign language and art films and screen opera and ballet live from the Met in new York. There is a small bar and coffeehouse which serves drinks, tea an coffee, cake, pizza, jacket potatoes and sandwiches. You can take your bar drinks and coffee into the cinema with you. There are special showings for mothers and toddlers, autistic people and senior citizens. The last is particularly good value at £4.50 including a complimentary coffee and biscuit.- Or why not buy a year's membership and get 10% off everything you spend?

“Most comfortable in the City”
Reviewed April 28, 2014

It tends to be specialist though does show most of the blockbusters. Slightly more expensive than the chain cinemas but the comfort is worth it (and if you are so inclined you can bring alcoholic drinks in to the screening with you provided you have bought them from the bar)

“A cinema where you're treated like adults”
Reviewed April 22, 2014

Lovely little venue. Good basic hot food options, but get there early enough to order, though you can take the food and drinks in to the screens with you, hence treated like adults. More of such cinemas are needed. Happy to be a member there.
