“Superb food and brilliant service at a reasonable price”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 9, 2013

We first visited the Kohinoor about 30 years ago when we lived in Southampton and it was one of the best Indian restaurants in the area at that time.

Under it's current ownership, it is even better with superbly prepared and presented food inspired by southern Indian cuisine which offers a range of dishes that are not usually encountered in Indian restaurants.

The restaurant is simply furnished but without the clichéd decoration of the past or the "super modern" minimalist approach. Simply somewhere to relax and have your meal.

The food was beautifully prepared and had discernible flavours that weren't masked by too much heat. It was one of the best Indian meals we have ever had.

The service was attentive and fast, all carried out with a smile and was so unobtrusive that we didn't even consider whether it could be done any differently.

We were genuinely surprised at the reasonable price of our meal.

“Best authentic Indian Restaurant in the south”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 2, 2013

So many 'indian' restaurants are not the real thing, but the Kohinoor of Kerala, in the Portswood district of Southampton, definitely is! One look at the menu immediately says 'authenticity'. Yes there are the usual suspects (kurma, dhansak, karai, tikka masala) but where else outside London would you find mosala dosa, kaka (muscles) and ulithaya (my wife can't pronounce this last one so calls it euthanasia!). The vegetarian selection is equal to the meat-arian. The proprietors, Kamal and Abraham, are from Kerala so know their food and are friendly and eager to make your visit a good experience. Try the Kohinoor once and you'll want to go back - I promise. Oh, and make sure to book for evening meals (even mid-week) as this place is becoming increasingly popular.

“Decidedly average”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 2, 2013 via mobile

Went here because of the rave reviews but ended up feeling underwhelmed by the whole experience.
The service was top notch, the food no better than average and five bits of chicken per curry is hardly substantial and the napkins were paper!
It was very busy but the place lacked atmosphere and with the air com on high it was rather nippy.
In my opinion there are better Indian restaurants in Southampton and this place although not bad is not where I would choose to frequent again.
