“Reasonable hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 14, 2012

Stayed on a Saturday night with my husband and 14 year old son in a family room. The hotel is new and clean. The room was a good size with a comfortable double bed, but the sofa bed was hard and lumpy. The shower was hot, although my son said the temperature fluctuated. We were on the ground floor which was very convenient for reception and the bar/restaurant. From the window I could see that there were no parking spaces remaining by the end of the evening. Our room was quiet even though there were clearly revellers checked in to the hotel! Breakfast was average. The coffee was from a self-service machine, but was hot and surprisingly alright. There wasn't any bacon (at breakfast!) and the sausages were tasteless. We'd arrived early so didn't have to queue. Check out was quick, and the receptionist was polite.

Room Tip: We arrived at 7pm and were able to find parking spaces. Remember your parking ticket to exit the car...

This is a modern, well kept facility, ideally situated for the cruise liner port or for exploring the New Forest and surrounding area. Clean, with everything you need for a stay, either overnight or for a few days, the decor is pleasant and the staff helpful and welcoming. It is set in pleasant surroundings amongst multi national facilities but away from the main road, although we did experience some traffic noise from a connecting road. It is an award winner, but I can't give it top marks because of its services. We paid for wi-fi. It kept dropping out and, in over an hour, we were unable to download a single thing as it was so slow. In the end, we were not charged. The connection only applies to one item so, if you have a tablet, a laptop and a phone between you, you have to pay £3.50 an hour for each appliance. The phone signal is also poor. The breakfast was awful. Too many people and inadequate staff and tables. Cheap concentrated squash tasting dusty and insipid, toasters that didn't toast the bread, solid butter too hard to spread as it came straight from the fridge, cold scrambled egg and tasteless, cheap sausages. We would rather have been asked if we wanted breakfast as an optional extra and paid for tomatoes and bacon, or for something, anything, to liven the plate up. Apart from that, we would recommend it. The lifts work, toilets are immaculate, the lounge area pleasant, lots of car parking, it was warm, and lovely carpeting made it reasonably quiet, apart from the inconsiderate late night guests over whom the hotel has no control.

Stayed for one night prior to a meeting locally. Price was very reasonable and the location good, especially for motorway access. Room was a decent size and the double bed comfortable. Good work space available too in the rooms as I still had a presentation to complete. Staff were helpful but was stuck in a rather long queue to check in and the check in process once I got to the front of the queue was rather frustrating! Breakfast was nothing special but edible. Bathroom was clean although be careful in the shower. It was incredibly slippery once any shower gel or shampoo was used and felt a little dangerous. Would definitely benefit from an anti-slip mat.

Whilst there were a few quibbles, I can’t complain about the value for money and the general presentation of the hotel. I would stay here again.

Couldn't fault the hotel except the most important thing, a good nights sleep! We stayed in room 247 and the bed was terrible, dipped in the middle and you could feel the springs. A real shame as the hotel is in prime location with helpful staff, won't be staying again. Terrible night!

CONS
Having just read the comment by Brian P I now understand why we couldn't find a parking space. There should be at least 1 space for each room, and letting absentee parking may make money, it meant I had to park outside the hotel grounds!
This is the first hotel I've stayed in that says bacon is only for weekdays! Meant that hot breakfast for a bean and sausage hater was very limited.
Lovely cleaners, but when they left the window open all day ( even though I opened it before breakfast to freshen the room and shut it after breakfast), on return about 8pm, the room was like an icebox for quite a while till the heater got going. We had to go down to the bar. Do I detect a cunning sales plan?
PROS
They had sorted out the lack of towels from our previous visit.
They promptly gave us more than one key when asked.
The welcome was much warmer than on previous occasions.

Room Tip: Ask for one away from any dogs. When you get a rowdy party going to bed in the early hours, a barkin...

Had just an overnight stay prior to a cruise and was well pleased with both the evening meal and bedroom. I was also able to park my car for the 12days of the cruise for just £5 per night. This I consider was excellent value for money and would recommend to anyone thinking of staying overnight in Southampton whether taking a cruise or just visiting Southampton.

I last stayed at this Holiday Inn Express 3 weeks ago. I try to stay here whenever I pass through Southampton as I find the rooms modern, clean and comfortable. I find the staff to be very efficient and courteous and no request too problematic for them to deal with and, most importantly for us, the hotel mostly seems to have a sense of calm about it (when pepper pig is not in town I should add). I have stayed both in the Express and a full Holiday Inn and have to admit to enjoying the Express at Botley more than the full Holiday Inn. True you do not have table service and have to order food at the bar in an Express, but that is purely because Express Inns are not allowed to offer this service I believe, but overall, I have found them to offer a more personalised service.

My only reservation is food pricing. Although I find the food quality to be quite high, so is the cost. However, that said, you would have to go a long way to beat the breakfasts on offer at Botley. The choice is large and varied with no limit on what you can eat; quality is excellent, and the best part of it is that it is included in the room price, something not many hotels (if any) to my knowledge, offer.

All in all I would say that the Holiday Inn Express at Botley is pretty hard to beat.
