“Odd atmosphere”
Reviewed March 2, 2013

Had lunch here yesterday and the food portions were HUGE but the staff are really quite surly and the whole place feels run down and grubby. It is Southampton's oldest pub so perhaps I'm being a bit harsh but it just seems gloomy and dark and the customers all stare at new arrivals as if they've got two heads. I won't make a habit of having lunch in there but might still pop in of an evening because they have Doom Bar which is great.

“Potentially fantastic pub in a woefully tatty state”
Reviewed February 23, 2013

Having grown up in Southampton with fond memories of the Red Lion, I'm so disappointed to see the state of the Red Lion. A friend and I stopped in for a drink recently, during an occasional visit to Southampton. I was curious to see what it was like these days. A sad sight awaited to me. What a stark chasm there is between the glorious fabric of the building and its present state of repair. It looks like it's received absolutely no care or attention in the 25 years since I frequented it as a young man.

It must be tough running a pub these days in this economic climate. And, I guess, at least the place hasn't been done over by Wetherspoons or the like and hence completely stripped of its personality. It'd be great to think that a place such as this could pay its way and justify a bit of investment. Someday, perhaps. (In the meantime, please stay away, J D Wetherspoon!).

“Great pub!”
Reviewed February 9, 2013

We wandered into this pub by accident because we were starving and we couldn't get a table in Oxford Road. First impressions were not so good, the pub is very old and has an amazing interior but the restaurant area is a bit like a canteen and not very welcoming. Undaunted and not expecting much we ordered food which came very quickly I was not expecting this as the pub was heaving with people and the restaurant was full. Food was amazing, fantastic home cooking at a reasonable price. Simple meals using great ingredients cooked by somebody who knows what they are doing. I cant remember when I had a better meal in a pub. The staff are really friendly and helpful. The pub has a friendly welcoming atmosphere. I have lived in Southampton for 5 years how did I not find this place before? will definitely be going back.

“Good Southampton pub.”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

Kind staff and good traditional pub food. Drinks are not over priced and a great place to just chill and watch football with mates.
