The common has a lovely atmosphere and is absolutely stunning. If you are interested in wildlife it is a great place to go to spot all different types of woodpecker. It can be a great place to go for a bike ride although some of the general public do not ensure their dogs are kept away from cyclists.Go there during the day not during the night as a word of warning as there is limited lighting in Southampton and it can be quite dangerous to walk through after dark.

The Common has something for everyone and can be a relaxing Sunday afternoon walk, fitness ground or just a 'back garden' to relax in. It's a shame some dog owners aren't responsible enought to clean up after their dog and give dog owner a bad reputation.

A real asset for this city, the common gives everyone free access to open grassland, woodland walks, two natural lakes and a model boating lake.
There is the Hawthorns wildlife centre with its varied environments which is very informative, great for the kids, on the site of the old Chipperfields zoo.
Close by is the Cowherds pub, a very popular place to eat.
The common is also where you will be able to visit various shows and fairs during the year, although sadly we no longer have the balloon and flower festival.
The old Southampton cemetery is in the south corner of the common, which is gradually being rejuvenated by volunteers.
The common is a brilliant place to pass a few hours, walk along the tracks or Tarmac paths and enjoy the fresh air.

We are lucky enough to live next to Southampton Common. A lovely place to walk, cycle, play with the children. Woodland, wide open grassy areas, fishing lake, bird lake and the boating lake (no boats there these days though) wonderful paddling pool and the Hawthorn Centre make for an enjoyable destination for all ages any season of the year. Only draw back is no toilets; (except during summer holidays there is a portaloo at the children's paddling pool) however The Cowherds pub is on The Avenue and on the opposite side of The Common (Hill Lane) is The Bellemoor pub; both are open from lunchtime onwards so you can always pop in there if neccessary!
You need to pay to park before 3pm in the car park however there is plenty of free parking on the roads around The Common; just make sure you don't park in the residents or restricted bays!
