It is difficult to avoid St Michael's. It is one of the older churches in the UK. The church yard reminds us of the churchyard we read about.

This is a fantastic Anglican church with a wonderful musical life. Stunningly high calibre choir at the 10:30 Sunday service in term times and often free lunchtime concerts in uni term time as well. The font is rare Belgian black marble and the tomb of Tudor Baron Richard Lister is there.

The oldest church in Southampton which survived the bombing in the War.
Beautiful mediaeval and in the heart of the old city with Tudor House opposite and old pubs nearby. Also old city walls with old shops and wine stores underground. Well worth wandering round.

St Michael's Church stands in the heart of Southampton's Old Town, in its own square and facing the fifteenth century Tudor House. Its central tower is the only surviving part of the original eleventh century church and it gives the building a most unusual appearance. Instead of a rood screen separating the nave from the chancel, there is the attractive stone wall of the tower, with an archway cut in its base giving access to the chancel and a view of the beautiful and unusual east window.

The chancel was rebuilt in the twelfth century and the two chapels in the thirteenth. Most of the north aisle was added in the fourteenth century and the south aisle in the fifteenth. The nave was remodelled in the early nineteenth century when the medieval stone pillars were replaced by cast iron ones and the roof was raised and flattened.

Unfortunately the medieval stained glass windows were shattered by bombs in the Second World War, but they were replaced with some modern designs, such as the west window depicting St Michael slaying the dragon, the east window with its churches and a third with badges, all of which I find very attractive.

I discovered several interesting pieces of furniture in this church, especially the unusual carved black marble font, which was brought here from Belgium in the twelfth century, and the brass lectern in the nave, which is fourteenth century and believed to be the oldest in Britain. It was rescued from the nearby Holy Rood Church when it was hit by a bomb in 1940.

It is a shame that this church has to be locked in the daytime, presumably to prevent vandalism and theft, but should you find it locked, you can see much of the interior through the glass doors and panels to the sides, which appear to have been designed for this purpose. A leaflet posted at the entrance describes the church's history and interesting features.
