The Bargate & Town walls are (for me) the most amazing historical elements of Southampton to visit. The Bargate was the main gateway to the city in past.

The historic walls of Southampton mainly date back to the second half of the 14th century when the town at that time was completely enclosed in a 1.25 mile structure. Various parts have been removed over the years to allow roads and building work, but large sections remain and are a tourist attraction. A highlight is the old Bargate in the Main Street which makes a fine sight. There are walking tours run by local guides which set out from the Bargate itself and details can be found online.

Just the remains of the fortress and nothing much in particular... very simple! Located next to the West Quays.

You wouldn't travel just to see Bargate, but as part of a Southampton Walls walk, its a highlight. There's a picture of how it used to look and we have that side-by-side with a picture we took when we were there.

We took a walking tour, and got to go up the tower. What a view of the town and what history! Otherwise I think the public can only look at Bargate from outside.
