“More than meets the eye”

If you visit the Bargate in Southampton, walk around and see all of the old walls, the Bargate is only part of what is left but is the best preserved part, there are other interesting buildings including old pubs (Red Lion & Duke of Wellington) Tudor house Museum in Bugle St and Westgate where the Pilgrim Fathers left for America. If you like history it's worth remembering that Southampton has a history dating back to at least the Romans, it has a Saxon past and the old walls and wine cellars (vaults) are from medieval times, sadly much has gone but there is still lots of history, you just need to research to make it worth a trip.

“Looks fab”

This is the gate way to the oldtown in Southampton. Now only the gate remains but it is still reminds one that it was the gate for tax collection in the past. The plaque by the gate explained that there used to be a court room as well.

Photogenic architecture before entering the oldtown.

“A little piece of Southhampton History”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 11, 2013

Bargate and the old walls of Southampton are amazingly incorporated into the city centre. Lots of little nooks and crannies. Look around Southampton centre and see how many you can find!

“Interesting part of the city that avoided the WWII bombing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 23, 2013

Some negative reviews on here, but take it for what it is. It is one of the relatively few parts of old Southampton that survived the World War II bombing, and is one of the medieval gates to the city, which has been well-preserved. Not worth a trip on its own, but part of a tour around Southampton. When I went (Saturday) there was a market next to it.

Southampton is a nice town, full of nice things to see!
It's an old town and Bargate rapresents the "door" of the town
