“Excllent stay”
Reviewed June 2, 2013

Excellent stay in a first class hotel. Hotel was easy to find in a good location near the docks and waterfront yet close to the centre of town - train and bus stations within walking distance. Welcome was very friendly and professional. Bedroom was clean; bed was comfortable; facilities as you would expect. My package was dinner, bed and breakfast - good value if booked online in advance. The bar and restaurant were pleasantly decorated (although the chairs in the bar area were not particularly comfortable) Good choice in the restaurant and the food was excellent. Good wine list. Buffet breakfast had large choice and food was well prepared. Fitness centre available - although not put to use on this visit. My only negative point was the £5 to pay for parking the car, which is a pet hate of mine. Overall, however, an excellent stay - and I would return.

We always stay pre-cruise at this hotel. I have to say that this was by far the best stay yet. There have been issues for me with cold plates at the breakfast buffet but, on this occasion the plates were hot and the breakfast excellent. In addition as we were staying over a Sunday night we had complimentary access to the in house movies. Cannot wait for our next cruise and we will be staying at the Novotel, Southampton.

We have stayed at the Novotel before and been more than satisfied with it but this time, having booked so far in advance, we got the best deal yet, and so opted for an executive room and breakfast. The only gripe being, the now £5, car parking charge which really grates.

The very pleasant and helpful receptionist quickly and efficiently checked us into room 211.

Extras in an executive room included;

1) free wifi - not that we ever got it to work!! had to go to reception to log on!
2) Nespresso coffee machine - personally thought it a waste of time, only ever got a luke warm half filled cup of average coffee from it
3) complimentary bottles of water in the fridge
4) free local telephone calls
5) extended range of very nice toiletries
6) super quality toweling bath robe and usual hotel slippers
7) free films - good selection so watched Les Mis and Quartet

The room also had the standard, safe, beverage tray, ironing board and iron and hairdryer.

It was a good sized room, in very good state of repair. Plenty of desk space. Settee (third bed) was comfortable and the bed itself good - pillows not special.

Breakfast was very enjoyable. Good range of hot and cold items. The freshly baked still warm baguettes delicious to have filled with hot nicely cooked bacon. The staff were friendly and cheerful and happy to bring as much coffee and tea as you wanted.

We do vary the hotels we stay in for our pre cruise stays but do find the Novotel to be the best for price generally- as we book way way in advance and you know exactly what you will get which is always good. It's location, just a short walk into the centre of Southampton is a big plus too.

Having stayed at this hotel before, had no hesitation in rebooking for another cruise from Southampton. It is ideally situated for any of the cruise terminals and convenient for last minute shopping. Hotel continues to offer good standard of service etc. and look forward to returning there in the near future.

We stayed in this property as a precursor to a cruise. First the good points: The hotel is very close to the cruise terminal, as well as the National Express bus stop (and across from the new Southampton police station if that makes you feel safer). There are two "American" restaurants just across the parking lot (Friday's and the ever present McDonalds) and there are many stores within easy walking distance. You could actually walk to the cruise terminal and the National Express bus station if you didn't have much luggage with you. Other than those good points, the rest of the hotel is just "average". The rooms are quite small and a bit tired (not terribly dated though). The rooms also have that weird Novotel bathroom configuration, with the toilet in one room and the sink in another, as well as the 1/4 span shower glass that always results in the water getting all over the bathroom floor. The staff are helpful. Overall it's "OK.

We stayed here for one night on mid may with family and had 3 rooms between us. We had booked an executive room and the only benefit was that we had slightly more room than the other two. There was supposed to be a nespresso machine for us but the tray with the capsules was empty. The breakfast is a food selection but expensive and I think next time we would get breakfast elsewhere. The rooms were clean and very comfortable and extremely convenient for the shopping centre as well as the docks and the cruise liners. We would stay here again.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your thoughts here on Tripadvisor. Our Executive rooms are the same dimensions as out other room categories but do come with a nespresso machine, Bose docking station, robes & Slippers, additional toiletries and Internet. I am sorry that the capsules tray was empty and I have passed your comments onto our housekeeping team to ensure this is not overlooked. Again thank you for your comments and we look forward to seeing you again

I give a 5 as I think some of the writing are not giving justice to this hotel.
I had problem first when I try to find a good standard hotel in Southampton (using most of time Sofitel) and every writing were "dated or tired room", including the Grand.
I decided to go for Novotel, mentioned as a 4*. Ok the value room was quite pricy for Novotel, but I was really surprise by the cleanness, the design, space and accessories.
Everything you need is there, Espresso machine, kettle for tea and coffee, complimentary water bottles, bathrobe, sleepers, internet access including an airport express to use wifi and free video channel.
Bed was comfortable and the shower powerful.
Furniture are modern even if they look Ikea style, but still prefer that than tired one.
Use the restaurant in evening, food was acceptable and service was ok.
Had breakfast and that was ok for the value, even if I think this should be included for the price I paid.
Overhall, I was happy of my choice and definitely recommend if you stay in Southampton.

Room Tip: Choose Executive room for everything included.
