“An expensive ok stay”
Reviewed June 23, 2013

Useful location, but very expensive if you are working on a budget and or paying yourself.
Essential to book or reserve everything at reception when checking in.
Car parking on sight but £10 per night!
Overall the place is just about average and is in need of a major makeover.

Room Tip: Ask for what you want when booking, eg quiet, view, high low etc but be prepared to pay!

We stayed here a couple of years ago and for an overnight stop before cruising is fine. Two gripes are that we booked two rooms about 8 months ago and are paying the same price as our companions. They have a large suite with two balconies and bathrooms whilst ours is a standard hotel room. Good for them but not sure how this works on the pricing structure. The other gripe is staff. They are either very good or awful. Our welcome at reception has to be the worst we have had at any hotel. He was rude, abrupt and had no customer service skills at all. The bar staff have been good and friendly but our companions safe failed to open in their room, trapping their passports. This was sorted eventually by a very good member of staff but they were initially told they would have to wait until tomorrow as the maintanance staff had gone home!
For a convenient overnight stop before joining your ship it serves a purpose but accept that it is a bit tired and in need of refreshment. However the complete lack of service on arrival should be addressed - had we had the option we would have taken our business elsewhere.

When we were looking for a hotel to stay in we were unsure about this hotel due to negative reviews. All that needs to be said is they certainly were not staying in the Grand Harbour in Southampton, or if they were they must be very moany guests. The only point I would say is the pool area was tired looking, however it was clean and with more facilities than in the " usual " hotel pool area. The spa treatment was wonderful. Our room had a fantastic view over the docks, and the Royal Princess looked fantastic both at night and day. Restaurant staff were polite, helpful and discreet. All in all a wonderful stay.

My colleague and I stayed here recently while we attended a course. Payment for the three night stay had been paid in advance by our company travel agent and we presented a voucher on check-in. The rather rude desk clerk insisted that the payment had not been arranged in advance until I insisted that he check. He then confirmed that we were entitled to bed and breakfast and we checked in.
On the second morning while I was having breakfast my colleague came in to join me and was stopped at the door. She was told that breakfast was not included in her room rate which meant she had to go back to the desk and reconfirm her reservation.
On checkout my colleague paid a parking fee using her credit card and we were given receipts with zero balances due. However, when she returned home and checked her credit card balance online she had been charged £750 for the rooms in addition to the parking fee. She has had to make numerous calls to the hotel to try to sort the mess out.
This is a hotel which has a rather higher opinion of itself than its customer service and facilities deserve. I definitely would not stay there again.

We stayed overnight on Wednesday to save on an early start on Thursday morning for my brothers wedding. We did not arrive until about 10 pm so were looking forward to getting something to eat and then getting some sleep.
Our room 153 was very big with a kingside bed which was very firm. I had paid extra for a room with a view and it was hard to tell whether we had this or not as it was dark.
We ordered room service which was very efficient and quick.
I was awoken at 6am by a van reversing and at that point I looked out the windows to find that not only did we not have a view, but were in fact overlooking the goods in / waste area! Cars and vans were regular and because one of the windows did not close properly it was pretty noisy!

Breakfast was very nice and there was loads of choice. Top tip is get your toast in the toaster prior to getting your hot food. It takes a few minutes and saves your fry up from getting chilly.

On checkout I raised the issue of lack of view and noise from the area and received a discount on our stay which I was happy with.

Would stay here again if stopping over in Southampton - but would request a room on a higher floor overlooking the docks.

The hotel was clean and tidy and the service was good. It's also a great location for a shopping trip to West Quay as its just over the way.

My husband booked a bed and breakfast package at the grand harbour for our anniversary, I was impressed with the lobby area and the reception staff where polite and attentive.
We had a coffee before going to our room and service was good, got into our room at 3pm and went to use the spa facilities which was use of the pool, jaccuzi, steam room and sauna, which was very good and enjoyable
. After our swim we went to our room to get ready for our evening meal, we went down at 7pm and was greated with warmth and politeness and made to feel special, the staff where excellent and looked after your every need. The 3 course meal my husband and I had was first class , we even got a glass of champagne from the waiter which was a nice touch.
The room was very comfortable and the bed was large and comfortable to.
We went down for a buffet breakfast the following morning and again the staff where attentive and polite. The buffet breakfast had so much choice and again the food was of a high standard.
Over all our stay was excellent and I can't wait to go back again.

I stayed on business at this hotel. One thing I've learnt is always judge a hotel in its sausages.
Anyway, the room was fine, very clean and a little worn. My room had a lovely view of the flat roof, but that's to be expected in the cheap rooms of any hotel.

The hotel seems geared towards the cruise market, so it seemed busy at times. The public areas have a quality feel to them too.

But it can't be faulted for comfort, cleanliness and service. Good breakfast buffet with good, v polite service. Quite near to the retail part for the big names shopping and a coupe of decent pubs on the way into town in the smaller streets.

More than happy to visit again.

Room Tip: Go up. First floor rooms overlook the flat roof or busy dual carriageway.
