“service terrible, do not bother”
Reviewed February 10, 2013

i took my son and a friend to the Slug and Lettuce and wish we had not. The meal started OK order taken promptly and drinks delivered but no mention of the almost one houe wait for our cold main courses. We could see little point in complaining as there were very few staff around and those that were, were rushed off their feet. We tried to order dessert but were told there would be a half hour wait! I feel the Slug and Lettuce should employ more people and improve the service.

“Disaster meal!”
Reviewed January 18, 2013

Dear god, where to begin? My girlfriend turned 20 last Monday so i arranged a surprise party for her and a few friends at the slug and lettuce southampton. We'd been there once or twice before as a couple and really enjoyed it. We sat upstairs and were soon seated. We began walking to the bar, talking about whether or not all 7 of us had to show i.d. A rude scottish waiter called Dave walked past carrying food and said we all had to show all our ids downstairs and order all food and drinks at the downstairs bar? Its a restaurant for christ sake? On one side of the upstairs bar, the shutters were down and three quaters down the otherside. We all headed to the downstairs to explain the waiter had sent us downstairs because the upstairs bar was closed. Darren the assistant manager explained that the bar shouldn't be closed and rang upstairs to open it. We all headed back upstairs, were Dave informed us he had now opened the bar. We knew this was lie because we all saw Darren make the phonecall upstairs. The barman slammed the shutters up and both sides were fully open. We finally got drinks at the upstairs bar without the other barman asking for any of our ids? We sat down and ordered. The food took 40 minutes (which we were informed of) to arrive and was very tasty, the only problem was the lack of it. 3 people had started to eat their food, leaving 4 others still waiting 15 minutes afterwards. Me and my girlfriend were hungry. I turned around to Dave, who was sorting a bill for another table and asked him the other 4 plates of food where coming? In an aggressive manor he said he would go to the kitchen and attend to it after he had sorted the bill and stated that he couldn't do anything about it whilst we were still in conversation. The food finally came. Me and friend Tom had ordered rump steak. My rump steak, hit the table looking delicious. To my amaze Toms steak came out looking like a fillet steak? It was a fillet steak. This was not on the menu, but tom didn't care and wolfed it down. Mine, although being tasty was lukewarm which slightly disappointed me but i was too hungry to send it back. The majority enjoyed their food, the problem being i was just starting mine as somebody else had finished. At the end of the night i went downstairs to share my dining experience with the manager but at 10pm, she had gone home for the night. Instead, i shared my views with the assistant manager Darren who took my comments on board and apologized being the only helpful member of staff we spoke to. He arranged a free round of drinks for the table, a kind gesture in what proved to be a below par dinner. Being local students, we won't be rushing back in a hurry.
