“Great stay with good company and breakfast.”
Reviewed July 11, 2009

Lovely small hotel which made our stay with a toddler very easy. We were upgraded to a large room with a great bathroom which was ideal. The bath was a luxury. Friendly service and fantastic breakfast cooked fresh to your order. Really helpful with our toddler. Would recommend to all travellers.

The standard room was so tiny I wondered where to put my small suitcase, the bed being the only option. The shower room was again tiny with no working extractor. No toilet roll was available - apparently it was hidden in some strange cabinet that looked like part of the sink. These apparently minor problems we could have coped with until we tried to sleep. Cheap noisy duvet that crumpled up every time we turned over and light streaming through the cream curtains. We complained at breakfast to the owner, he argued with us and said that no-one else had had the same problem. We asked to move rooms, eventually he agreed and gave us a key to a nicer room which we went to look at - second floor, brown and cream decor and above all dark curtains! We went out for a walk while the new room was to be cleaned having been told he would move our bags to it later. On our return from a short walk to the beach we returned to the first room to find the key to the new room missing but no note. I rang down to find that the owner had decided not to move us, instead to fit a new blind some time that day. I went down to speak to him, said I was unhappy that had not spoken to us, he was so rude and argumentative - there is no sense with him of the customer being right. We told him we did not consider the amount we had paid for a small room to be good value. He said the tax man takes so much of what we pay and went on about his high costs for providing breakfast. We ended up leaving the hotel after the one night and going elsewhere. Someone else had already prepaid for the second night as we were part of a group booking for a wedding. No refund was offered, he just shouted at us. He was by far the worst manager / receptionist I have ever come across and wonder whether the hotel can survive with such poor management. After us leaving so unhappily, he didn't even contact us to later apologise for his rudeness. Be warned - if you stay in a standard room don't take anyone with you as there is not enough room and if you like to sleep in the dark, take a blindfold. Above all, don't waste your time complaining -he is too arrogant to listen.

From the outside, this boutique hotel was a little hard to find and you started to find yourself wondering what you'd got yourself into but as soon as you walked into the intimate reception area your uneasiness abated. A lovely light and fresh dining room off to the right and a small lounge area greeted you warmly as did the gentleman at reception who gave an easy going but genuine check in.

The hotel is designed and decorated lovingly by a lady with a well honed sense of style. The rooms are all different, each one would be a pleasure to stay in but I am sure the regulars have by now picked their chosen room. Anything you required was arranged promptly. The hotel could improve itself by adding some light background music to the dining room of a morning so that that the discussions of people dining are not broadcast and shared with all others. There was also a few minor probs with the shower.

Ultimately though Florence House Hotel offers great value for money, location, comfort and the luxury and individualised experience you hope for when you book a boutique hotel.

A long weekend was not long enough - Florence House Hotel is a superb establishment - why?

The reception and hotel staff were not obtrusive, but were both friendly and helpful at all times.
The rooms were first class.
The food was cooked to order at times selected by us and it was excellent.
The location is great allowing easy access to all that Portsmouth and Southsea have to offer - there is even a handy pub within a few hundred yards.
Negatives - none.

This is a truly stunning hotel. My partner and I spent a weekend relaxing in Portsmouth and had the pleaseure of staying at the Florence House. The attention to detail is amazing. The chain hotels don't even come close. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. Amazing Breakfast and friendly staff.

We stayed at the Hotel for just one night on our way home from France after coming off the ferry. We were very weary from 2 days of travelling and it was a pleasure to arrive at Florence House Hotel, Daniel was waiting for us and everything was very straightforward as we arrived.

Our room was lovely, immaculate and excellent facilities. The location of the hotel made it easy to walk out to look for restaurants etc. Breakfast was delicious with a very good selection. Everything was just straightforward, pleasant and well thought out - a very professional service.

We will definitely rebook if we are travelling from Portsmouth by ferry again.

Quite a large group of us stayed between this hotel and the sister hotel Somerset House for my sisters wedding. The service was absolutley outstanding, Michael the host catered to our every need. The interior could not be faulted and the bridal suite was stunning! I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Portsmouth.
