We enjoyed a low key visit to this nice city museum. We were especially interested in the Conan Doyle exhibit and the temporary Sherlock Holmes exhibit. Both were really well done and great for aficionados.

We visited this museum on a wet Sunday in August. It was welcoming and despite being on the small side it was very well laid out over several floors. For us, a lot of the exhibits, held many memories of our childhood especially, for me, Dagostinos Icecram. The Conan Doyle story and film posters was the best part but I noticed the younger people were having most fun with all the old style computer games on the top floor. If you are a Pompey fan there is something for you too.

I was surprised by the amount of activities going on in this museum, on a gusty August day.
For a few weeks it has an exhibition of Sherlock Holmes memorabilia, as Arthur Conan Doyle was once a GP in the city. There are mentions of its naval past with connections, and posters and relics from its seaside era, with recontructions going back to the Georgian era, and the realistic 1950's living room.
On the top floor, there was a room full of old gaming machines, going back to the old Atari machines.....good for teenages on a wet day.
Additionally, there were drawing programmes for toddlers and young children, next to a craft- dinosaur collection from the Isle of Wight.
There is also a gift shop and small cafe - overall a nice morning visit, and its free to go in.

Free entry. Great place to visit if you are a Sherlock fan. Very interesting to see the history of Portsmouth as well. Nice staff and a good gift shop. Lots of stairs, unsure as to whether there is a lift inside for wheelchair users.
